Music Ecosystems Inner Scandinavia (MECO) vill genom ett grenseoverskridende samarbeid mellom forskning, utbildning och bransch verka för en stark, innovativ och inkluderande musikbransch i Värmland och Hedmark. Viktigt för projektets måluppfyllnad är att förstå hur olika aktörer skapar och tillgodogör sig musikupplevelser i det digitaliserade musiklandskapet. MECO är ett EU-finansierat Interreg-projekt mellan Karlstads universitet, Høgskolen i Innlandet och Studiefrämjandet. Projektägare är Karlstads universitet och Høgskolen i Innlandet. Studiefrämjandet är projektpartner. Övriga medfinansiärer är Region Värmland, Arvika Kommun och Hedmarks Fylkeskommun.

Information added on 2020-05-19, regarding the mitigation of the effects of COVID-19 (the coronavirus pandemic that started in 2019) (English language only): Through a cross-border collaboration between research, education and industry MECO is working for a strong, innovative and inclusive music industry in the regions Värmland and Hedmark. MECO is now conducting an online survey on how the music and event industry is affected by the corona virus. With increased understanding and knowledge conditions can be created for a cross-border and competitive musical life which promotes both growth and quality of life.

Achievements (EN):

The project Music Ecosystems Inner Scandinavia has been implemented with funding from the European regional development fund Interreg Sweden-Norway, focus area Innovative environments (Case ID: 20201630, Commitment no: 2018-000004) in the period 1.09.2018 - 31.12.2021. Project owners have been Karlstad University and Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences with Studiefrämjandet Örebro-Värmland as project partner. MECOs work has been guided by the project's main goal: “to investigate, innovate and optimize Inner Scandinavia's music service ecosystem departing from user experiences and digitization. In doing so, we develop a cross-border and long-term sustainable research, education and innovation collaboration increasing the regional industry's capability and innovative power. A strong and innovation-oriented music industry in turn creates growth and promotes the quality of life for people in Inner Scandinavia.” MECO has consistently focused its work on the goals and purpose of Innovative environments. The efforts are driven through the three main work packages (WP): Research, Education and Industry. In our research, we have studied and mapped various aspects of the music service ecosystem in the region with a focus on economic growth and employment as well as social and cultural value creation. Overall, our studies have broken new ground in terms of knowledge about innovation in service ecosystems in general, music service ecosystems in particular, and have contributed to practical implications of how service innovation can be achieved and critically highlight how the value of service innovations should be distributed. The research has helped establish the Music Innovation Lab (MIL). The MIL concept serves as a platform for meetings between various actors (practitioners, researchers and interest organizations) in the regional music service ecosystem. All activities within MIL have aimed to promote innovation and value creation through co-creative activities between students, music actors and industry representatives. The work has to a large extent included strong collaboration between participating research environments and other actors with cross-border research exchange and competence development. Research results have been published in international journals and have undergone extensive scrutiny, which guarantees quality and international dissemination. The research has been presented in MECO’s digital seminar series and the project’s research is actively included in teaching and part of the curriculum in several courses and programs. Established international collaboration and common competence requirements form the basis for the higher education institutions’ extensive collaboration and close contacts internationally with a view to research collaboration and exchange. The research also supports the importance of various functions and roles in a music service ecosystem and identified needs for support of industry actors. Development of education has played a central role in the project together with other competence-building activities and networks. One result is the establishment of a three-year program with a bachelor's degree in the Music Production Program at Ingesund School of Music, Karlstad University (180 credits). Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences has developed plans for the establishment of a specialization in music business in the Master's program in economics and management. Furthermore, the work has resulted in the establishment of innovative topics/courses, for example where students are trained to act as consultants for music industry actors, as well as to develop digital media material, music and sound design for games. A mentor program for female and non-binary students has been initiated within the music production program at Karlstad University with a focus on providing tools and actively working with equality and gender equality in the music industry. The program has provided the opportunity to create long-term relationships with mentors from the music industry and to provide better conditions for creating a successful, rewarding and balanced professional life. Efforts that together form the basis for cross-border collaboration, where students and artists can build a career in the music industry. With the pandemic, we adapted our activities to actively support the regional music industry based on how their work and activities had been affected by the pandemic. Among other things, we created digital innovation workshops in collaboration with Innovation Park (Karlstad and Arvika) and Riksteatern Värmland. This platform allowed people in the cultural industry (live stage, music, theatre) to explore, develop and test new service and product ideas together. The collaboration generated a number of new co-creative constellations and has also attracted idea bearers from the regional cultural industry in general. MECO’s efforts for business start-ups have made it possible for music actors to start up, innovate and further develop companies, products and business models. Music actors and music students have been connected with industry coaches with cutting-edge expertise and genre knowledge. A mentoring scheme for start-up companies where students and industry players have been involved has led to several new establishments with the purpose of learning and development. Overall, this has contributed to new and more comprehensive knowledge and understanding, as a basis for increased competence and innovation among music industry actors as well as in education and for other social actors. Through research, educational development, industry-related activities and innovative working models, MECO has contributed to an innovation-driven music life in Inner Scandinavia with an active music industry who are in an active international network, in line with Europe 2020’s ambition to develop services for increased growth and employment.
