Tornedalen utgör en unik kulturmiljö där naturen och fiskebeståndet samt byarna som är belägna på ömse sidor om fångstplatserna har i sekler bildat en enhetlig och samverkande helhet. Även det gemensamma meänkieli förenar byar. Det har bildats en livstil, försörjning, hobby, berättelser och kultur kring fisket. Det traditionella fisket är samtidigt en vardaglig sak och någonting mycket unikt. Fiske med håv vid forsarna och fiske med nät vid selplatserna är urgamla fiskemetoder vid gemensamma fångstplatser i nedre Torneälven utöver fiske med mjärde och olika typer av statiska laxgårdar. De nedärvda fiskemetoderna vid de gemensamma fångstplatserna hotas idag av eventuella biologiska förändringar i både naturen och fiskebestånden men också av förändringar i kulturen och livsföringen. De traditionella fångstmetoderna, fångstanordningarna, fångstredskapen, fångst-färdigheterna, organisering av fisket, fiskelag och miljöer är sedan urminnestider förknippade med nedärvda kunskaper och färdigheter. Åldrande fiskare, minskat antal fastboende och förändrade näringar hotar både fisket med håv och nät. Digitalt bevarande av nedärvd kunskap på ett intressant sätt främjar överföringen av kunskap till yngre generationer. Det har länge funnits turism både på den svenska och på den finska sidan av Tornedalen. Tack vare det traditionella fisket och vackra omgivningar har Kukkola också varit ett betydande resmål. Det måste finnas sik i forsen att fiska och naturligtvis även fiskare. Utnyttjandet av den traditionella fiskekulturen som ett dragplåster för turismen har skett i mindre grad vid övriga forsar och fångstplatser. Dagens resenärer söker enligt undersökningar efter upplevelser och mer omfattande utbudskoncept. Det är viktigt att besöksnäringens utbud baserar sig på områdets kultur. Fisketraditionen ses som en attraktionsfaktor för Tornedalen och de traditionsbaserade tjänsterna som en del av ett helhetsutbud. Projektet är ett gemensamt utvecklingsprojekt för instanser som är oroliga för att den nedärvda fiskekulturen och sommarsiken i nedre Tornedalen ska försvinna. Med hjälp av projektet skapas förutsättningar för hållbar vård av sikbeståndet som samtidigt bidrar till levande fiskekultur. Projektet har en bred förankring och den har uppstått ur lokala behov. Beredning av projektet har genomförts genom ideellt arbete under ledning av Prosiika- förening tillsammans med fiskare, invånare, kommuner, företagare och experter. Över 200 personer har deltagit i förberedelsearbetet genom olika workshops och evenemang. Både detta projekt, Tornedalens sommarsik - kultur och kulturarv, och projektet Tornedalens sommarsik- natur och miljö, är viktiga och avhängiga av varandra. Utvecklande av turismen, upprätthållande av traditioner och hållbar vård av fiskebeståndet går hand i hand. Samtidigt erbjuder moderna teknologier nya möjligheter för både forskningen kring fiske och för bevarande och utnyttjande av traditioner samt synliggörande av Tornedalens rika kulturarv. Projektets huvudsakliga mål Projektets huvudsakliga mål är att stärka kännedom om Tornedalens unika nedärvda fiskekultur och förbättra dess dragningskraft bland områdets fiskare, invånare, besökare och speciellt ungdomar. Förväntat resultat Projektet ska resultera till att - De olika målgrupperna har bättre medvetenhet om sikens betydelse för området och dess kulturtradition, den egna identiteten och dess samband med den nedärvda kulturen och naturen - Ett attraktivt kunskapspaket om fiskekulturen och naturen har utvecklats med involverande metoder och finns tillgängligt. - En plan för ett gränsöverskidande Naturum har tagits fram med Fiskemuseet vid Kukkolaforsen som bas - Målgrupperna har knutits starkare till fiskekulturen och naturen och inspirerats till gränsöverskridande verksamhet.

Description (EN):

The Torne Valley is a unique cultural environment where nature and fish stocks and villages located on either side of the fishing grounds have for centuries formed a uniform and cooperative whole. The common meänkieli also unites villages. It has formed a lifestyle, livelihood, hobby, stories and culture around fishing. Traditional fishing is at the same time an everyday thing and something very unique. Fishing with hedges at the rapids and fishing with nets at the harness sites are ancient fishing methods at joint catching points in the lower Torne River in addition to fishing with creek and different types of static salmon farms. The inherited fishing methods at the common fishing grounds are currently threatened by possible biological changes in both nature and fish stocks, but also by changes in culture and lifestyle. Traditional trapping methods, means of capture, fishing gear, catch skills, organisation of fishing, fishing teams and environments are then associated with inherited knowledge and skills. Ageing fishermen, reduced numbers of residents and changing industries threaten both nets and nets. Digital preservation of inherited knowledge in an interesting way promotes the transfer of knowledge to younger generations. There has long been tourism on both the Swedish and the Finnish side of the Torne Valley. Thanks to the traditional fishing and beautiful surroundings, Kukkola has also been a significant destination. There must be whitefish in the rapids to fish and of course also fishermen. The use of traditional fishing culture as a draw patch for tourism has taken place to a lesser extent in other rapids and catching places. Today’s travelers are searching for experiences and more comprehensive supply concepts. It is important that the hospitality industry’s offer is based on the culture of the area. The fishing tradition is seen as an attraction for the Torne Valley and the traditional services as part of an overall offering. The project is a joint development project for bodies who are concerned about the disappearance of the inherited fishing culture and summer scenery in the lower Torne Valley. The project creates conditions for sustainable management of the whitefish stock, which at the same time contributes to live fishing culture. The project has a broad foundation and it has arisen from local needs. Preparation of the project has been carried out through voluntary work led by Prosiika Association together with fishermen, residents, municipalities, entrepreneurs and experts. Over 200 people have participated in the preparatory work through various workshops and events. Both this project, the Tornedalen Summer Sik — Culture and Cultural Heritage, and the project Tornedalen’s summer sik, nature and environment, are important and interdependent. The development of tourism, the maintenance of traditions and the sustainable management of fish stocks go hand in hand. At the same time, modern technologies offer new opportunities for both research into fishing and for the preservation and exploitation of traditions and the visibility of the Torne Valley’s rich cultural heritage. The main objective of the project is to strengthen knowledge of the Tornedalen’s unique heritage fishing culture and improve its attractiveness among fishermen, residents, visitors and especially young people in the area. Expected results The project will result in — the different target groups have a better awareness of the importance of whitefish for the area and its cultural tradition, their own identity and its connection with the inherited culture and nature — An attractive knowledge package about fishing culture and nature has been developed with participatory methods and is available. — A plan for a border-skiing Naturum has been developed with the fishing museum at Kukkolaforsen as a base — The target groups have been more closely linked to fishing culture and nature and have been inspired by cross-border activities.

Achievements (SV):

Mål: Projektets huvudsakliga mål var att öka kännedomen om Tornedalens unika nedärvda fiskekultur och förbättra dess dragningskraft bland områdets fiskare, invånare, besökare och speciellt ungdomar. Resultat: Under projekttiden har över 50 organisationer och drygt 380 personer från Finland och Sverige utvecklat projektets innehåll tillsammans med projektpartners. Projektets slogan var ”En älv, två stränder och en levande fiskekultur”. Under de tre åren som projektet pågått har man samlat in traditionskunskap om fisket och intervjuat över 70 fiskare. Resultaten presenteras i form av videor och infoböcker om sikfiskskultur som t.ex: - Traditionella fiskemetoder. - Utrustning och infrastruktur som tex en pata, som är en träbrygga eller bro som gör det möjligt för fiskare att komma nära. - Fiskemiljö, organisering av fiske och vanor i olika byar. - Sik i traditionell och modern matlagning. Dessutom dokumenterade projektet sikforskningsmetoder implementerade i angränsande naturprojekt. Det finns 33 videoklipp och 12 infoböcker tillgängliga på projektets webbplats, främst på finska och svenska. Torneälvens forsfiskekultur valdes till den nationella förteckningen över levande kulturarv i Finland under 2017, och 2018 gavs en liknande nominering i Sverige. Achievements (EN):

Objective: The main goal of the project was to raise awareness of the Torne Valley’s unique inherited fishing culture and improve its attractiveness among the area’s fishermen, residents, visitors and especially young people. Results: During the project period, more than 50 organisations and more than 380 people from Finland and Sweden have developed the project’s content together with project partners. The project’s slogan was “One river, two beaches and a vibrant fishing culture”. During the three years of the project, they have collected traditional knowledge about fishing and interviewed more than 70 fishermen.
