Smart Cities Accelerator

The Smart Cities Accelerator project is based on a research project. With the help of data from that project, and based on the needs of the municipalities, efforts will be made to increase the share of renewable energy and to secure its use. Denmark’s Technical University, DTU, has an ongoing research project called Smart Cities. With the help of the INTERREG Smart Cities Accelerator project, the ongoing research project can test its data and results in real life. The project gives researchers the opportunity to test the research and adapt the results to the reality and to the real needs that exist. In this way, the researchers can ensure that the results are used and see what works and what doesn't," says project manager Anne Marie Damgaard. But it’s not just scientists who benefit from the project. The five municipalities involved in the project will be helped to investigate seven specific needs they have identified in renewable energy and smart cities. Different aspects create a holistic perspective: However, the project is not limited to linking research institutions and municipalities. In Smart Cities Accelerator, lawyers are also involved to investigate which laws restrict green development, for example in the field of construction. These will be mapped and then inform politicians in Denmark and Sweden about them. It is also necessary to study what causes citizens to change their actions and to embrace new technologies. By including the various aspects, the goal is to create a holistic approach to renewable energy that enables change. This work is important for the green transition and for getting away from fossil fuels. It is important for us people, because it is on the political agenda, but also financially. If you can reduce energy through data, you can also reduce costs. Cooperation will create international interest: By involving the whole of Greater Copenhagen, the project believes that they are investigating such a large region that they can also market and sell project results and methods to other large cities. The aim is to make our region interesting to other parts of the world so that we come here and study how we have worked with smart cities and how we have engaged citizens. We want to create concrete examples of what we have tested and be able to show how we have reduced energy consumption by concrete percentages. They see cross-border cooperation as a success factor for the project. One might think that in a region like Greater Copenhagen, which is only shared by a strait and a boundary, things should work in the same way on both sides of the strait. That’s not the case. Some things are Sweden better at, and others Denmark is better at. That is why it will be a great exchange of experience. Across the countries and across universities. In this way, we can create collective, green growth in the region," says Anne Marie Damgaard.

Projektet Smart Cities Accelerator utgår ifrån ett forskningsprojekt. Med hjälp av data från det projektet, och med utgångspunkt i kommunernas behov, ska man arbete för att öka andelen av förnybar energi och säkra användandet av den. Danmarks Tekniske Universitet, DTU, har ett pågående forskningsprojekt som heter Smart Cities. Med hjälp av Interreg-projektet Smart Cities Accelerator kan det pågående forskningsprojektet testa sin data och sina resultat i verkligheten. – Genom projektet får forskarna möjlighet att testa forskningen och anpassa resultatet till verkligheten och efter de riktiga behoven som finns. På så sätt kan forskarna säkra att resultatet används och se vad som fungerar och vad som inte gör det, säger projektledare Anne Marie Damgaard. Men det är inte bara forskarna som drar nytta av projektet. De fem kommuner som ingår i projektet får hjälp att undersöka sju särskilda behov som de har identifierat inom förnybar energi och smart cities. Olika aspekter skapar helhetsperspektiv: Projektet nöjer sig dock inte med att koppla samman forskningsinstitutioner och kommuner. I Smart Cities Accelerator deltar även jurister för att undersöka vilka lagar som begränsar den gröna utvecklingen, exempelvis inom byggområdet. Dessa ska kartläggas för att sedan informera politiker i Danmark och Sverige om dem. Likaså ska man studera vad som får medborgare att förändra sitt agerande och att ta till sig ny teknik. Genom att inkludera de olika aspekterna är målet att skapa en helhetssyn inom förnybar energi som möjliggör förändring. – Det här arbetet är viktigt för den gröna omställningen och för att vi ska komma bort från fossila bränslen. Det är viktigt för oss människor, för att det står på den politiska dagordningen men också rent ekonomiskt. Om du kan minska energi via data så kan du också minska kostnaderna. Samarbetet ska skapa internationellt intresse: Genom att involvera hela Greater Copenhagen anser projektet att de undersöker en så pass stor region att de också kan marknadsföra och sälja projektresultat och metoder till andra stora städer. – Målet är att göra vår region intressant för andra delar av världen så att man kommer hit och studerar hur vi har arbetat med smart cities och hur vi har engagerat medborgarna. Vi vill skapa konkreta exempel på vad vi har testat och kunna visa på hur vi har reducerat energianvändningen med konkreta procentsatser. De ser det gränsöverskridande samarbetet som en framgångsfaktor för projektet. – Man kan tycka att i en region som Greater Copenhagen, som bara delas av ett sund och en gräns, så borde saker fungera på samma sätt på båda sidor sundet. Så är det inte. Vissa saker är Sverige bättre på, och andra är Danmark bättre på. Därför blir det ett fantastiskt erfarenhetsutbyte. Tvärs över länderna och tvärs över universiteten. På så sätt kan vi skapa en samlad, grön tillväxt i regionen, säger Anne Marie Damgaard.
