Description (EN):

The service will be aimed at children with hyperkinetic disorder, which is a strong predictor of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This year initiative will focus on disadvantaged border areas in Northern Ireland, Ireland and Scotland. There is a high level of prevalence of ADHD within the population with some estimates suggesting that it affects up to 5% of the population. Currently 30% of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) referrals in the Republic of Ireland are for suspected ADHD. These figures are mirrored in other jurisdictions. While international guidelines for treating this disorder suggest a high quality parenting programme should be the first offer for families this option is generally not available to families in the partner areas.This Initiative will offer a programme for families consisting of an information and awareness raising programme, a screening programme for hyper kinetic disorders, and a treatment service in the form of the Incredible Years Parenting programme-ADHD protocol. It is anticipated that 60% of the children accessing the treatment will benefit from it. For children who don’t benefit from the programme referrals on to CAMHS or other appropriate services will be made. In tandem with this process there will be training for those working with young children, in particular teachers and early year’s professionals to increase their awareness of ADHD and to support them in developing strategies to manage difficult behaviours. Protocols for referral into and on from the programme will be developed on a cross border basis.This approach to dealing with hyperkinetic disorder and ADHD is very much in line with governmental policies in mental health and indeed policies for children generally in all three jurisdictions. It is also an option preferred by a large number of parent support groups.

Achievements (EN):

The Changing Lives Initiative is working to create a better understanding of ADHD, providing an early intervention programme for families with children aged (3-7) experiencing behaviours consistent with ADHD. To date, the project has provided an intervention to over 1,400 families. In early March 2020 the project celebrated the launch of an innovative new app that will provide parents with in-depth information on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) tailored strategies and support tools. The new app will support remote and rural delivery of the intervention to families and will provide access for those who cannot access the programme faceto-face. It will help families understand what ADHD is and provide practical strategies and tools for parents to use with their children. It is particularly relevant for parents who have concerns about their child’s behaviour, but are not yet sure if their child has ADHD. In addition, the app will be extremely useful for those working with children in helping them understand ADHD and how they might support children who have issues with inattention, hyperactivity or impulsivity.

Expected Outputs (EN):

A Screening Programme for Children with Behavioural Problems. Parents who have concerns about their children will be able to have their children tested to identify if they have hyperkinetic disorder. It is estimated that 1,400 families will access this service. A Support Service. An information and support service will be provided to all parents whose children test over the threshold for hyperkinetic disorders. This will involve identifying resources and services that may be available to them and their children and make referrals for them where appropriate. It will also provide them with information about the IY treatment programme and book them onto a programme if required. A Treatment Service. Families whose children test positive for hyperkinetic disorder will be offered the 20 week IY ADHD Parent Programme. This programme is specifically designed to clinically treat children with ADHD symptoms and improve social and emotional functioning. It includes a series of supplementary sessions which place a greater emphasis than the regular IY programme offering, on problem solving, praise and incentives, limit setting, anger management, parental stress, fostering stimulus restriction and enhanced routines. IY is an evidence based programme that has been developed over a 20 year period. The ADHD protocol was developed recently by Incredible Years developer, Carolyn Webster-Stratton and has since been the subject of a number of evaluations carried out in Ireland and in Portugal. The outcomes of these evaluations demonstrated that 60% of children whose parents attended the programme were clinically recovered after the programme and these results were sustained 6 months after the programme. Families will be able to access all services based on their proximity to that service rather than the jurisdiction they live in.
