MEDFEST aborde le défi de la diversification traditionnelle des destinations touristiques ‘Mer & Soleil’ avec de nouveaux produits durables basés sur le patrimoine culinaire riche et réputé de la Méditerranée. Notre objectif est de créer des outils et instruments pour la conception de nouvelles expériences culinaires durables qui seront offertes aux visiteurs afin de: 1) diversifier le secteur du tourisme en termes de produits et leur caractère saisonnier; 2) apporter le développement du tourisme à l’arrière-pays côtier; 3) sauvegarder le patrimoine culinaire pour les générations futures. Afin d’atteindre les objectifs fixés, nous produirons les résultats suivants: - Outils pour améliorer les destinations touristiques durables en utilisant le patrimoine culinaire comme ressource. - Création de huit nouvelles destinations touristiques durables dans l’espace MED basées sur le patrimoine culinaire. - Stratégie transnationale commune pour la gestion et la planification du tourisme culinaire dans l’espace MED. Cette approche est unique parce que les initiatives pour le patrimoine culinaire MED sont généralement sans lien et à ce jour, il n’y a eu que quelques approches communes développées pour intégrer le patrimoine culinaire MED dans une offre touristique durable. La méthodologie dans MEDFEST est basée sur la planification d’action participative où les trois types principaux de parties prenantes (producteurs, organisations touristiques, décideurs politiques) sont impliqués.

MEDFEST is tackling the challenge of diversifying traditional ‘sun & sea’ tourist destinations, with new and sustainable products based on rich and renowned culinary heritage of the Mediterranean. In so doing, we will increase the sustainability and quality of life in MED space. Our objective is to create tools and instruments for designing new sustainable culinary experiences, which will be offered to visitors to: 1) diversify the tourism sector in terms of products and its seasonality; 2) bring tourism development to the coastal hinterland; 3) safeguard culinary heritage for future generations. To achieve the stated objectives we will produce the following outputs: - Tools for enhancing sustainable tourist destinations by using culinary heritage as a resource. - Creation of eight new sustainable tourist destinations in MED space based on the culinary heritage. - Common transnational strategy on managing and planning culinary tourism in MED space. This approach is unique because MED culinary heritage initiatives are generally unconnected and to this day there have been only few common approaches developed to integrate the MED culinary heritage into a sustainable tourist offer. The methodology in MEDFEST is based on participatory action planning, where three main types of stakeholders (producers, tourism organisations, policy makers) are involved and take responsibility for project’s actions from the beginning till the end to ensure the durability of the results.

Achievements (EN):

The 5th implementation period was dedicated to finalize activities in eight pilot territories. MEDFEST partners developed concrete culinary tourism experience products in local territories: The Mar and Munt Collection (FR), Were is it...? Gastro routes (PT), B2B for culinary providers (GR), Gastronomic Routes Menja't l'Alt Urgell (ES), Unique Kras Carso Food Tour (SLO), From Farm to Fork (CRO), Mushrooms and wild herbs (IT), and Honey Routes in Rural Larnaca (CY).In this period emphasis was given to fine-tuning the tourism offer and role of stakeholders in it, to organize capacity building activities (study visits), prepare promotional materials, organise local showcases and press conference to present the project result also to wider public and tourism actors. All project partners elaborated action plans, but went much further then this – action plans are implemented and thanks to strong engagements of local actors, new sustainable culinary experiences are ready to enter the market. Lessons-learned from developing our own territorial actions helped us to refine and finalise Strategy of planning sustainable culinary experiences. In the strategy we first present general principles and goals that we wish to achieve in the long run by promoting new and enhanced culinary tourism products. We present the basic concept our knowledge was built on; three development scenarios identified in study phase of the project; and driving forces behind successful culinary experiences. In order to make the strategy user-friendly for local communities and practitioners we include also guidelines for preparing action plans, some aspects on capacity building activities, and recommendations from the practice.Most of the activities (including management and communication) have been implemented on time. Deliverables have been disseminated in the media via web platform, social media, articles and press releases. There is slight delay in finalising the MEDFEST final publication - joint work of all project partners, which needs some final language and editing corrections. All project partners have been intensively engaged in preparation of the international event in Tavira (Portugal) planned for September 2019.
