Malgré un contexte économique difficile en Europe, l'industrie cosmétique et nutraceutique poursuivent une croissance significative. Ces secteurs sont caractérisés par une forte demande des consommateurs pour un retour aux produits naturels issus de ressources locales.Actuellement, la majorité des actifs naturels utilisés dans les formulations cosmétiques ou nutraceutiques sont importés alors qu'une grande biodiversité est présente, notamment dans les régions du Nord-Ouest, générant des résidus encore non exploités comme source d’actifs naturels. L'objectif de ce projet est l'intégration des sous-produits et résidus agricoles dans une économie circulaire en utilisant des méthodes innovantes pour identifier les bioactifs ainsi que des procédures d'extraction et de modification évolutives respectueuses de l'environnement. Ce concept implique la mise en place de procédés intégrés durables pour convertir les résidus agricoles des régions du Nord-Ouest, et plus particulièrement des régions transfrontalières du Benelux, de France, d'Allemagne et Suisse en produits bioactifs à haute valeur ajoutée ainsi qu’en produits chimiques biobasés pour leur utilisation dans les secteurs clés de l'industrie européenne: cosmétique, neutraceutique, énergétique, chimique et agricole. A terme, ce projet améliorera la compétitivité des industries européennes, en particulier des PMEs, de l'Europe du Nord-Ouest. Cette nouvelle chaîne de valeur permettra aux producteurs locaux de trouver des alternatives pour une valorisation économique de leurs sous-produits avec des entreprises locales qui bénéficieront de ressources pour le développement de produits avec des agents bioactifs renouvelables. Le modèle d’économie circulaire proposé renforcera la compétitivité de l'Europe grâce à la complémentarité de ses secteurs d'activité et de son réseau de PME mais également par une forte interaction avec les instituts scientifiques.

Die Kosmetik- und Nahrungsmittelergänzungsindustrie in Europa verzeichnete trotz eines gesamtwirtschaftlich schwierigen Umfeldes ein signifikantes Wachstum. Vor allem durch die Nachfrage nach regionalen und natürlichen Produkten von Seiten der Konsumenten.Die meisten natürlichen Aktivstoffe für die Herstellung von Kosmetik- und Nahrungsergänzungsmittel werden trotzdem weiterhin nach Europa importiert. Die Identifizierung von neuartigen natürlichen Aktivstoffen aus Europa könnte daher die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der europäischen Kosmetik- und Nahrungsergänzungsmittelindustrie, vor allem von KMUs, in Nordwesteuropa deutlich steigern. Eine Vielzahl an unterschiedlichen natürlichen Reststoffen aus der Agroforstwirtschaft, die bisher kaum hinsichtlich ihres Potentials an Aktivstoffen untersucht worden sind, stehen hier zur Verfügung. Ziel von AGRIWASTEVALUE ist die Integration von Reststoffen und Nebenprodukten aus der Agroforstwirtschaft in eine neue Kreislaufwirtschaft zur Identifizierung wertvoller Inhaltsstoffe für Schlüsselindustrien in Europa wie Kosmetik, Nahrungsmitteln, Energie, Chemie und Landwirtschaft durch neuartige umweltfreundliche bzw. einfach skalierbare Extraktions- und Modifikationsmethoden. Neue Prozesse sollen dauerhaft integriert werden, um agrarischen Reststoffe aus der europäischen Nordwest-Regionen, mit der grenzüberschreitenden Region Belgien, Luxemburg, Frankreich, der Niederlande, Schweiz und Deutschland zu nutzen um diese in hochwertige bioaktiv Stoffe und andere biobasierte Plattformchemikalien umzusetzen.

Despite a difficult economical context these last years in Europe, the cosmetic and nutraceutical industry continue a significant growth. These sectors are characterized by strong demand from consumers for a return to natural products from local resources.Currently, majority of natural actives used in cosmetic or nutraceutical formulations are imported in Europe while a great biodiversity is present, especially in the North-West Regions, that generates large amount of residues that are not fully exploited for the sourcing of natural actives. The aim of the AGRIWASTEVALUE project is the integration of agricultural by-products and residues into a circular economy by using innovative methods to identify valuable ingredients and environmentally-friendly extraction and modification processes, which are easily scalable.The inherent concept of the project involves the setting up of new durable integrated processes to convert agricultural residues of the European North-West regions, especially transborder regions of Benelux, France, Germany and Switzerland into products with high-value bioactive agents and bio-based chemicals for their use in key industrial sectors in the European industry: cosmetic, nutraceutic, energy, chemical and agriculture. That will directly enhance the competitiveness of the European industries, especially SMEs, of the North-West Europe. This new value chain will allow local producers to find alternatives for an economic valorization of their by-products with local enterprises/partners that will benefit of local resources for the development of products with readily available renewable bioactive agents. The circular economic model proposed in this project will enhance the competitiveness of Europe through the complementarity of its activity sectors and its network of SMEs but also with a strong interaction and an exchange of know-how with the local scientific institutes.

Expected Outputs (EN): Agriculture sector in NWE generate a considerable amount of by-products (~70 kt/year) under-valorized. Approach in converting aboriculture and viticulture waste-streams into valuable bio-actives agents for key sectors of NWE is currently at TRL 3-4.
