The North Sea Region (NSR) faces soil degradation and biodiversity loss resulting from present-day agricultural production processes. Adopting carbon sequestration (CS) techniques in land management can help to reverse these processes and play a crucial role in food security and climate change mitigation. Greening the food supply chain through carbon farming (CF) will restore the organic component of the soil; actively remove atmospheric CO2, increasing soil biodiversity, and providing better nutrient and water holding capacity for crops.The NSR has strong interrelated food production chains, which lack a long-term vision on sustainable soil management and green production processes. The absence of sound, economically viable business cases and a lack of awareness of the potential of CF approaches amongst economic players is hindering their rapid adoption. This will be a key factor in progress towards greening the NSR agrifood sector. Involvement throughout the integrated value chain is required to allow this progress to be sustainable and durable.This project will test and validate economically viable business cases for CS in whole agri-food chain and for third parties to compensate their environmental footprint. It will also raise awareness on the possibilities and benefits of CS amongst entire supply chains. Results are an increased awareness of the economic and ecologic potential of CS, improved soil physics, and 10,000 tons of CO2 (equivalent)/acre sequestered in soil.

Achievements (EN):

During the 4 years of the project we experienced carbon sequestration (CS) turned into an important topic within the EU. We are very proud the Carbon Farming project was part of this "movement". The partnership organised a lot of activities all over the NSR region to show techniques concerning CS by landowners; field days, simulation instrument, Open days, movie, presentations, participation at fairs like the Agritechnica, factsheet with top 5 of measurements etc etc. Important goal of the project was to organise business cases to raise aweareness on the possibilities and benefits of CS among the entire supply chain. This was a challenging proces. Businesses prefer a reliable system to be sure the landowner is really capture an amount of CO2. In total even 8900 ton CS is realised by farmers, who are involved in the project, during the project (2022). In total over 22.000 tons are expected to be realized by the business cases from the Carbon Farming project. Unfortunately an approved accreditation methodology is missing so it difficult to monitor CS. We had to involve and convince businesses during the proces. The project realised already 11 business cases (by autumn 2022). The cases are divided in 4 categories: inside the agri-food chain, outside the agri-food chain, governement institutions, at farmlevel and short chain. Partners are still working on business cases; we expect to deliver some new cases next year. During the project the partnership experienced more and more interest from several stakeholders: farmers, businesses, policymakers, students, scientists. So we communicated lessons learned by the Carbon Farming project to them by different communication activities: movie, animation, radio broadcast, podcast, lectures, articles in renowned magazins and newspapers and presentations after invitations for policy and scientific conferences. Our final, digital conference, December 2021, was participated by 260 persons, all over the North Sea region. The involvement of policy makers was great. On several levels policy makers supported the project. The partnership delivered a whitepaper: "Incentivising Carbon Farming: policy recommendations from the Carbon Farming project". We even are welcomed by EU commissioner mister Frans Timmermans, who mentioned the project in his EU climate strategy. The EU commissioner was very interested in that way farmers are motivated to implement CS measurement and how the EU can support this.
