Water is one of the most valuable raw materials for today's civilization and one of the most important factors that determine the quality of our lives. Technological development, on the one hand, plays a significant role in various forms of environmental pollution, and hence for water. On the other hand, scientific development can detect and combat these risks. This includes monitoring of the occurrence of recently unknown forms of contamination caused by micropollutants. Recent research shows that the aquatic environment, from which we produce potable water in Europe, contains anthropogenic substances - until a few years ago, their presence was unknown and there are still considerable knowledge gaps. This is where boDEREC-CE sets an innovative approach by implementing pilot sites in CE countries to monitor emerging contaminants (EC), above all pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCP). PPCP includes any products used in personal healthcare, cosmetics, and medicated products, many compounds of which are broken down and degraded, many are not, and could persist in soil and reclaimed water, creating potential hazards to environmental and human life. This lack of knowledge needs to be tackled by developing one common course of action and policy on EU level. Thus, boDEREC-CE is focused not only on the study of PPCP behaviour, particular attention is paid to assessing the effectiveness of attenuating this specific type of pollution, using different types of drinking water treatment technologies: the main output is an innovative model based decision making tool, which, given future legal thresholds, can be used as an early warning tool. This tool will be tested under different conditions at waterworks. Furthermore, activities will be started to inform public about measures to reduce the use and waste of PPCP. By the formation of a transnational board, research institutions and waterworks will continue networking for defining standards and guideline values.

Water is one of the most valuable resources for today's civilization and the main factor that determines the quality of our lives. Nowadays we face new challenges in water resources management. One of the biggest is emerging contaminants (ECs) - newly synthesised compounds and those that are present in the environment for some time but were not perceived as detrimental to the environment and human health. Most of these substances are not included in routine water monitoring programmes. Interreg Central Europe project boDEREC-CE “Board for Detection and Assessment of Pharmaceutical Drug Residues in Drinking Water – Capacity Building for Water Management in Central Europe” recognized this as an issue that should be tackled by strong transnational cooperation of wateroriented experts and relevant stakeholders through the common course of action and policy on EU level. The boDEREC-CE project underlined a need for integrated management of waterworks and gave recommendations for the enhancement of current legislation on drinking water standards for one of the EC groups - pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). boDEREC-CE set an innovative approach by implementing eight pilot areas across Central Europe, grouped in three clusters (groundwater, surface water, and karstic extraction sites), where behaviour of PPCPs, their natural attenuation and removal efficacy of different treatment techniques was thoroughly studied via jointly developed monitoring methodology and common project’s PPCPs database. Finally, boDEREC-CE brought new tools and strategies to be implemented by waterworks operators in their daily work.

Expected Results (EN): R 3.1 Status of integrated environmental management capacities of the public sector and related entities for the protection and sustainable use of natural heritage and resources achieved through transnational cooperation.

Expected Outputs (EN):

boDEREC-CE delivers a varied range of outputs, based on the knowledge about behavior of different types of PPCP in different types of natural environment of CE countries. Pilot sites provide results from quaternary fluvial sediments, sedimentary basins, crystalline massif and karst. From a practical point of view, the assessment of PPCP attenuation efficiency is a significant output. Different technologies for the production of drinking water will be considered from classical, through methods simulating natural processes. The final output will be a model decision support system, a software dedicated to waterworks in order to optimize their water abstraction and treatment schemes depending on hydrological regime, flow rates, groundwater levels and PPCP content, being individually calibrated to local natural conditions. Detailed information of the time and space changes in PPCP concentrations of water sources for waterworks represents a completely new set of knowledge on a European scale. While this knowledge falls into the category of research, boDEREC-CE project has ambitions towards a more applied sphere, represented by a model tool for optimizing the operation of waterworks at risk of PPCP. With regard to the cross-border impact of PPCP dissemination in surface and groundwater in EU countries, dissemination activities in the form of expert trainings will be a significant whose outcomes will result in proposals for consideration in national and international legislation.
