Digitization, circular economy, renewable energies, artificial intelligence: Industry is currently experiencing the arrival of another transformation cycle. In the near future, industries will operate and appear differently – with profound effects not only on production modes but also for working and social environments. To enable Central Europe´s traditional industrial regions to persist, there is need for both: economic innovation and societal development. Culture and creative industries (CCI) – known for their alternative working structures and lateral thinking character – could come in as a core driving force on both levels of this transition. However, traditional industrial regions – being historically focused on technological innovation – have until now rarely discovered the potential of CCI. Additionally, culture and creative workers prefer urbanity – a social factor usually less developed in non-metropolitan industrial settings. At the same time, such regions do hold specific location assets for attracting CCI, e.g. producing industrial companies, vacant old-industrial sites, personal networks. In InduCCI, Central European industrial regions have teamed up to tackle jointly the challenge of fostering CCI. Through policies and trainings, they intend to bring about supportive frameworks for CCI in industrial regions – on regional, national and EU levels. Through pilot actions, they investigate the potential of CCI as economic actor and innovator as well as driver of social change and new entrepreneurship. Most promising approaches are made available in a toolbox to other industrial regions and European CCI networks for policy take-up. Via CCI, a new pioneer spirit in Central European industrial regions could come into being – thus reviving a cultural heritage and developing a distinction, for which these regions once were known and famous for.

The Role of Cultural and Creative Economy in Transforming Industrial Regions. Creative economy enables change. Digitization, circular economy, renewable energies, artificial intelligence: Industry is currently experiencing the emergence of another transformation cycle. These new production modes and mindsets not only have economic consequences but also affect society. To enable Central Europe´s traditional industrial regions to take on this challenge, there is need for both: economic innovation and societal development. The cultural and creative industries (CCI) can be a core driving force on both levels of this transition. Industrial regions and CCI have barely discovered each other yet. Cultural and creative workers often prefering urbanity above industrial settings. At the same time, nonmetropolitan regions do hold specific location assets for attracting CCI, e.g. real production, vacant old-industrial sites, personal networks. The EU-project InduCCI explored the potential of CCI for non-metropolitan industrial regions. We used the past 3 years for finding answers to questions like: How can CCI support production companies in their innovation processes? How can this empower industrial societies? How can industry-relevant entrepreneurial skills of CCI be boosted, and how can pull factors for attracting CCI be promoted? We – a partnership of 8 Central European regions – shared the InduCCI results at our hybrid final conference, hosted from Corda Campus Hasselt. We acquainted the expert transnational public with our dedicated policy strategies on regional and EU level, and with our tried and tested administration training and pilot actions. Beyond that, highlevel external speakers and panellists reflected with us on our findings.

Expected Results (EN): R 3.2 Status of capacities of the public and private sector for the sustainable use of cultural heritage and resources achieved through transnational cooperation.

Expected Outputs (EN):

At the end of InduCCI , industrial regions will be perceived as attractive places for CCI. In the partner regions, a critical mass of CCI is available and exerts gravity pulls attracting further CCI. CCI is well-networked within itself but also with the regional society and economy. Public administration is aware of the potential of CCI for industrial regions and offers appropriate location support. Respective policies, developed by the partners through exchange, are in place on regional level. Traditional industries are linked up with CCI and gain competition advantages through their involvement enabling them to better master transformation. New regional value chains are set up and operating. Through active presence of CCI, industrial communities develop and become more open to innovation and change and are more aware of ongoing industrial transformation processes. Pilot actions for improved interaction between CCI and industry/society are carried out and lay the ground for further activities beyond the project time frame. Regions beyond the partnership and European stakeholders are aware about the project findings. They adapt InduCCI methods in their contexts.
