The Fourth Industrial Revolution is here, are we ready? Companies across the globe are digitally transforming as they are challenged to improve business processes and develop new capabilities and business models. 4IR technology patent applications are on the rise, Industry 4.0 ambitions are high, manufacturing and manufacturing technologies do well, spending on the Internet of Things in industrial markets in 2018 looks promising … and the list goes on. The so-called fourth industrial revolution is of course not just a matter of technology. It is also a matter of cooperation between European regions! But while large companies are anticipating the changes arising from the digital revolution in the production and value creation process, SMEs are struggling to embrace the Industry 4.0 revolution. The uptake of advanced manufacturing solutions is still a challenge to SMEs: only one in five manufacturing companies have already used advanced manufacturing solutions. Partners from regions across Europe have decided to join forces to exchange experience on how policies related to Structural Funds can unlock the full potential of Industry 4.0, fully convinced that the success of digital transformation will greatly depend on the SMEs, which feels in need of more practical support. SMEs4I4.0 project is born to establish a common basis for policy learning among its members to overcome fragmentation of Industry 4.0 solutions and their enabling potential by dealing with main challenges hampering their diffusion into the European Union ecosystem. It is therefore key to bring together and to connect best capabilities across the EU as to foster the development, upscale, and commercialization but also diffusion of Industry 4.0 solutions – whether these are new technologies, products, services, business models, etc. The time has come to implement Industry 4.0, let’s cooperate!

Achievements (EN):

In terms of activities, the project has organised a total of 57 policy learning events. It has also identified 28 good practices, produced 7 action plans and led to the increased capacity of 82 people. In terms of results, the project has succeeded in improving 8 regional development policies for a total amount of funds influenced of EUR 8,898,475. 00.

Expected Results (EN):

The overall objective of the project is to trigger a policy change in the implementation of regional policies and programs related to the Structural Funds increasing the awareness and adoption of Industry 4.0 solutions and technologies by Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). The project aims to improve the partners’ capacity to design and deliver policies that support SMEs innovation projects, particularly as regards investments in services for technological strategic, organizational and commercial innovation in line with their S3s that uphold Industry 4.0 as the new paradigm to drive industrial development in the coming years. The project’s sub-objective is to uphold the improvement of the partners’ regional policies to boost Industry 4.0 by exchanging experience and good practices relating to: - the promotion of technological, organizational and socio-economic contents (services, practices, solutions) of the new Industry 4.0 paradigm within SMEs; - the introduction of digital technologies within SMEs with reference to e.g. the relationship among the company and its customers and the management of the supply chain; - the development of predictive models through further integration of virtual processing into the manufacturing process; - the supply chain management for value chain tracking and monitoring. The overall objective will be achieved through policy learning and capacity building activities on public policies supporting the uptake of the Industry 4.0 paradigm by SMEs. The learning potential embedded in interregional exchange will result in the uptake of new good practices and projects by the partners enabling the delivery of innovation in the regional supply chains, through the new investment projects, inspired by the exchange of experience, for the development and/or acquisition of Industry 4.0-related innovative services, practices and solutions by SMEs belonging to their specialized regional production chains.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The overall result of the project will be to improve the capacity of the partners’ policy instruments to support the adoption of Industry 4.0 by SMEs through the implementation of new and better projects. For each objective in C.3 the project will implement interregional learning activities (see C.4, D.1) that will produce surveys, workshops, case study visits, GPs analysis, etc to build the capacity of the partners and respective stakeholders. The results of these experience exchange activities will be: - a more capillary adoption of the technological, organizational and socio-economic features of the Industry 4.0 paradigm by SMEs, RTOs and other actors of the regional economic systems; - an increased use of advanced manufacturing technologies by SMEs for e.g. the management of the supply chain and the management of the relationship between firms and their customers; The project is expected to identify four GPs for each of the priority themes identified by the Industry 4.0 Partnership to favour the deployment of Industry 4.0 in the regions (see C.4): 1. Production Performance Monitoring Systems; 2. Predictive modeling and maintenance; 3. Virtual Reality and Simulation Technologies. 4. Smart logistics and network management. At the end of each semester 2 to 5 the project will deliver a policy guideline providing in-depth informations and recommendations about hot to implement the best GP identified by the partners for each of the theme at hand. These guidelines will provide the knowledge basis for the development of the Action Plans in the last semester of Phase 1 (M31-M36). The results of the project will be measured by the number of new projects resulting from the policy change, particularly through the result indicators and the self-defined performance indicators chosen by the partners for their policy instruments. Other outputs of the interregional cooperation will be: 63 policy learning events (8 interregional events in Phase 1 + 1 in Phase 2 + 54 stakeholders groups meetings in Phase 1) 1 methodology for the analysis of the good practices 16 good practices identified 4 Good Practices Guidelines with Policy Recommendations; 36 people with improved policy capacity 9 Regional Surveys 9 Action Plans to transfer Good Practices to the regions 9 Policy Instruments improved. The main outputs of the communication will be: 1 Communication Plan, 1 Project Brochure, 1 project poster, 10 Joint Press Releases, 54 appearances in media, 1 website regularly updated with 600 visitors’ sessions every 6 months, 2 social networks activated and regularly updated (Twitter, Youtube) with +300 members, 1 dissemination event with +100 participants (Phase 2 high level political conference), 5 external events participated in (conferences and workshops). The main outputs of the management will be: 7 Steering Group meetings with minutes, 1 Steering Group regulation, 6 six-monthly progress reports (Phase1) + 1 annual reports (Phase 2) + 1 final project report
