Description (EN):

One of the Europe’s most relevant resources are the rivers that cross it. They are not only the main responsible for the rich & diverse European natural ecosystems but also the main source of the water used by the population & population activities. Water is a scarce resource that must be protected and reused & in this context the preservation of the quality of the European rivers’ water is a major concern of local, regional, national & even European authorities. The project aims to go forward in the water directives implementation proposing the promotion of a smart water management (ICT should support the implementation of a smart water management in the participant territories as a transversal enabling technology that generates real-time information & allows different stakeholders to access & share it for a supported decision making process). The overall objective of the project is to exchange experiences & good practices between partners in the field of the efficiency of the water systems, to adapt those good practices & apply the lessons learnt to each partner reality through the development of individual action plans & to promote their application through the partners’ policy instruments. BIGDATA4RIVERS is in essence a driver for the generation & exchange of information & knowledge enabling better planning processes & decision-making regarding the local/regional water management. The interregional learning process will allow partners to learn & support each other based on their own experiences in the EU Water Framework directives implementation. The project main outputs are: • Joint analytical report aiming at identifying the main rivers’ water management policies in the project regions and compare the application level of the water sector European directives allowing partners to identify opportunities & improvement needs of their policy instruments (PI). • Exchange of experiences activities (site visits, knowledge transfer session and interregional workshop).

Achievements (EN):

In terms of activities, the project has organised a total of 49 policy learning events. It has also identified 15 good practices, produced 7 action plans and led to the increased capacity of 72 people. In terms of results, the project has succeeded in improving 3 regional development policies for a total amount of funds influenced of EUR 427,707. 00.

Expected Results (EN):

The project aims to improve the effectiveness of PIs in promoting and implementing an Intelligent Water Management through the exchange of experiences and methods for a more effective protection and preservation of European rivers water quality through a better response to the EU Water Framework Directives requirements and a more efficient water treatment system, infrastructures and networks supported by the ICT namely the ones related to the rivers quality of water. In this context, this project aims to: • improve the PIs effectiveness in the preservation/improvement of rivers water quality in processes like: impacts of discharges or loss of biodiversity and degradation of natural assets. • support the implementation of a smart water management in the participant territories using ICT as a transversal enabling technology that generates on real-time information and allows different stakeholders to access and share it for an integrated action and a supported decision making process. • develop regional skills and competences enabling project territories not only to improve the performance of their PI (strategic level) but also to improve the design and the effectiveness of the actions resulting from the targeted policies and instruments (operational level).

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main result of the project will be the improvement of the efficiency of water management policies & the PI addressed. BIGDATA4RIVERS wants to promote the development & implementation of smart water management in the project territories (with the support of the PI) introducing ICT in the water sector & promoting the improvement of skills & knowledge of the stakeholders of regional water sector. This will be embodied in the definition of potential new types of projects to be financed by the ROPs of the project territories as well as in the improvement of those programmes management supported by the exchange of experiences, & also the promotion of the introduction of the lessons learnt in those PI. Other result will be the improvement of skills & competencies of the participant institutions at strategic level (design of policies & strategies) & operational level (implementation of policies & respective instruments) here included the LSG members, specially the PI managing authorities. The project will also have as result, a wider & informed participation of the regional stakeholders in the design and implementation of the policy instruments improvement. The main project outputs are: - 1 Joint analytical report about the river basins management plans & policies of participating regions (state of play of the river basins management plans & policies; identification of the main areas where ICT can support/improve the water management & monitoring; main opportunities & needs regarding the improvement of the PI addressed & the good practices transferable to the other partners). - 42 Recommendations reports (to be shared between partners, supporting each other in the assessment of the needs & improvement opportunities of each project territory & of the good practices more appropriate to be transferred). - 2 Interregional knowledge transfer seminars aiming to improve regional knowledge & skills for the implementation of a smart water management in their territories. - 1 high level political event (to present and evaluate the project results and transfer it to other European regions). - 7 study visits (allowing partners to understand on-site the others’ reality, problems & good practices). - 7 Action plans (aiming the improvement of the project PIs). - 1 Interregional workshop (for debate & validation of the project action plans). - 3 project videos (to promote the project activities and findings and the knowledge transfer events). - 2 project network profiles and website. - 10 project coordination and management meetings. - 7 execution reports.
