Description (EN):

CityZen responds to the growing number of cities and regions that recognize benefits of urban farming for sustainability and revenues. The project aims to influence various policy goals like food quality and security, waste management, resource efficiency, community development and quality of life by introducing urban farming to policy makers as a successful business area. CityZen will explore values that urban farming as ecosystem brings and links them with new business models, entrepreneurship, innovative supply chains and support policies to transform cities and regions. The project aims to create a knowledge pool of urban farming policies, initiatives and business processes that support decision makers and leverage the efficiency of their actions. Being an emerging sector and a crossroad of many policies and sectors, urban farming is a valuable source of good practices and innovative ways to transform social and business settings in favour of growth and sustainability. Showcasing how improved policies impact partner regions, create entrepreneurship opportunities and drive business and social transformation is set a priority of the CityZen project. CityZen’s main outputs spell out in 5 Action Plans for policy change in the regions, a good practices ‘marketplace’, accelerators for policy makers, design thinking and serios gaming by a JRC SES technique and compelling guidelines on how urban farming changes city landscapes. The partners represent public bodies, a think-tank and research center coming from Bulgaria, Greece, Portugal, Spain and Germany. The project will scale up capacities in 5 regions by enhancing governance and monitoring systems, as well as by maturing new projects on urban farming and resource efficiency that foster interactions among local stakeholders and transform city areas into productive green spaces.

Achievements (EN):

In terms of activities, the project has organised a total of 48 policy learning events. It has also identified 18 good practices, produced 5 action plans and led to the increased capacity of 41 people. In terms of results, the project has succeeded in improving 5 regional development policies for a total amount of funds influenced of EUR 3,670,050. 00.

Expected Results (EN):

The CityZen main objective is to improve and mature regional policies on green innovation and RE by integrating urban farming models and practices. The project aims to create knowledge base and transfer scalable examples on how to support new business and innovation models in the sector that foster RE, green growth and jobs in cities. Better integration of policy and implementation together with new ways of policy stakeholders interaction are also in the core of the project to better showcase territorial impacts. Urban farming cuts across different policies and sectors and hence exploring synergies will be another contribution of CityZen. The partnership consists of regional authorities, knowledge institute and business support organization to meet those objectives in a learning process together with the regional stakeholders as advisory panel. Sub-objectives for policy instruments improvement within the Action Plans include: - better efficiency of existing and development of new support services to match regional challenges and launch or better use sustainable innovations; - better targeting the support services to different beneficiaries depending on their business models (SME, social entrepreneurs, PP ventures, sharing economy models, etc.) for accessibility and right support; - ensuring synergies of support services, cross-cutting policy areas and sectors to make better integrated policy mix for urban farming; - improving support policies governance and impact monitoring, showcasing positive effects in ‘policy-makers-stakeholders-citizens’ dialogue. Quality objectives of the learning process include: - exchange of knowledge at all levels (expert, institutional, regional, national, EU) and awareness on good practice examples to change regions; - keep momentum with regional stakeholders; - enhance ownership of the Action Plans by the regional ecosystems.

Expected Outputs (EN):

CityZen consolidates 8 partners participating with 3 ERDF instruments (LP, PP2, PP4&7) and 2 instrument related to local policies (non-SF, PP3&6, PP5&8). The SF to be influenced herewith amount to approximately 0,8 MEUR, and 0,45 MEUR non-SFs. The partners set self-defined PI indicators, closely linked with the RIS3/ERDF implementation in their regions. CityZen has 46 policy learning interregional events: 3 Peer-2-Peer events . 1 Good Practices (GP) workshop with Accelerator. 2 Impact Workshops (IWs). 3 Action Plans (AP) camps - 2 on-site events with 1 Accelerator, 1 camp as skype event. 30 RSGs mtgs held . 5 Staff exchanges hosted. 1 Webinar towards Ph2. 1 partner mtg to share experiences in Ph. 2. Methodologies and concepts: The events feature innovative approaches such as serious gaming, design thinking and accelerator activities for policy makers for an experience-based learning process. CityZen designs genuine approaches for peer reviews, IWs, SES tool, policy accelerator, GPs library, AP camps. Networking of regional stakeholders: 5 RSGs hold 30 local hub meetings in Ph1, RSG members partake in the learning events. Knowledge repositories: 1 GPs library of 15 validated GPs (3/region) - available to the INTERREG Europe community and beyond. 1 Final e-Publication – ‘Urban Farming Regional Policies, Scalable Innovations and New Business Models’ to sum up knowledge from the learning process, guidance to other regions on policy design, GPs in urban farming and spill-over effects. Capacity building: 48 persons with increased professional capacity, of which: 24 CityZen staff members (average 3/partner). 24 regional stakeholders (average 3/partner) with raised competences via CityZen activities. Policy and territorial change: 5 APs designed and implemented - 1 per policy instrument. Self-defined indicators monitored, success stories shared. Network and synergies effects with local and EU networks established . 1 'What's next' webinar to set the ground for Ph.2. 1 Final Conference as policy and dissemination events. Communication: 1 Communication Strategy. 1 press kit. 1 CityZen leaflet, 10 copies of A3 poster. 38 media appearances: 30 press releases (1 per partner Phase 1). 8 videos in YouTube channel (Sem 2-6). 6 e-newsletters/policy briefs (Phase 1). 1 active network with media, bloggers, vloggers. 550 sessions/(new and returning) visitors of the website per semester. Management: 1 Partnership Agreement . 1 kick-off meeting to set the scene. 9 project and 6 Steering Committee meetings within project meeting’s agenda in Ph.1&2. 6 skype conferences . 7 progress reports and 1 final report. Long term results of the CityZen partnership: enhanced operational capacity of municipalities and regions to develop support services, foster new business models in urban farming, scalable turn-key examples on sustainable food production, urban resource efficiency, business and marketing models, maturing flagship projects in urban farming in the regions.
