Urban Baltic Industrial Symbiosis focuses on initiating industrial symbiosis in order to make use of energy and other resources that would otherwise go to waste. Thus, emission of hazardous substances to environment and humans will be reduced. Industrial symbiosis is a known concept but the knowledge and experience varies accross the region, and it has not yet been approached in a systematic manner in most regions. We have identified a number of sites with symbiosis potential in the programme area, and will use four of them as pilot symbiosis plant in the project. Input will be experiences from existing symbiosis sites, where dramatic savings have been realized. The experience and learning from the existing plants and in the pilots will be documented in a set of tools for industrial symbiosis, which can be used by others also after the project. The tools will include analysis of symbiosis potential, best practices, business and funding models. The project will focus on cross-border experience exchange, critical to success due to the differences in experiences and knowledge of symbiosis in the programme area. All partners can learn from each other and by understanding the different situations in countries around the South Baltic. Due to the diversity of national settings and to the differences in terms of industries and of resources that are traded, and a number of other variables that influence contractual terms, a number of models will be needed. The goal of the project is to provide tools, implement five pilot projects and carry out activities to spread the project results and support and inspire new symbiosis projects. Since the business aspect is included in the tools, we expect sustainable symbiosis cases, and thus longterm effects on reduced pollution discharges.

Report: UBIS evaluation of pilots: What if we could increase energy efficiency in society by start sharing resources? Industrial symbiosis offers a possibility to use our resources more efficiently, by highlighting resource consumption and supply in a geographic area rather than in a single industry or building. The public sector could play a key role to help companies identify residual resources that could be valuable input for other companies and support them in finding suitable business models to realize these ideas. In the UBIS project, there are ten partners in five countries that have implemented five pilots – four technical pilots and one soft pilot related to public planning tools. This is possible because of the project Urban Baltic Industrial Symbiosis. We have learned and spread experience about industrial symbiosis. We have worked with ten partners in five different countries. Waste sorting system in Šilutė: Šilutė District Municipality implemented the project and built suitable sites for waste sorting. Each site consists of four semi-underground containers (household waste, paper, glass, plastic). Each container site contains 4 semi-underground containers for household waste, glass, plastic and paper. Even in the summer, these containers have no smell, they are protected by fence and residents are given keys so that every apartment building has its own containers. That way citizens are motivated to sort their waste and witness the price of waste management decrease. The benefit of the project is significant to the community of Rusnė Town, Šilutė District Municipality and tourists. This is possible because of the project Urban Baltic Industrial Symbiosis. We have learned and spread experience about industrial symbiosis. We have worked with ten partners in five different countries. Urban symbiosis and Urban Health in Bjuv The municipality of Bjuv has been focusing on “Urban Health” by Industrial Symbiosis. It involves identification and analysis, city planning and implementation. By using the residual heat from local industries the municipality has created new healthy and social environments for people in urban areas. A climate-smart way to create safe, attractive and sound environments in central Bjuv.Urban symbiosis takes advantage of all the functions of society. It creates participation and understanding of sustainability issues while adding great value to the urban environment. Gdańsk University of Technology focuses on heat recovery: Gdansk is recovering heat from gas trough a Spinning Fluids Reactor (SFR). The installation can be used not only for heat recovery from the gas phase but also for the rapid absorption of impurities such as carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds or suspended fine particles. The installation for recovering low-temperature heat from flue gas was based on a heat / mass exchange module in the form of a Spinning Fluids Reactor (SFR), it also contains a suspended particle size analyzer, allowing evaluation of the environmental performance of the unit.

Expected Results (EN): Verified toolbox for industrial symbiosis analysis and set-up. Five pilot investments. Established network for industrial symbiosis as a shared body for toolbox and experiences and thus facilitator for new symbiosis projects in the region.
