De wereldwijde vraag naar zeewier is groot en zal de komende jaren verder groeien. Dit biedt een unieke kans voor duurzame groei van de aquacultuursector in de Noordzee regio. In de afgelopen jaren zijn er meerdere kleinschalige zeewierinitiatieven opgestart in het Europese kustgebied, met name dichtbij de kustlijn. Grootschalige teelt van zeewier is echter nog niet mogelijk met de huidige stand van teelttechnieken. In dit project willen bedrijven Seaweed Harvest Nordsea, AtSeaNova, Murre Technologies en GEOxyz de productie van zeewier significant verhogen. Het zeewiercollectief Stichting Noordzeeboerderij en kennisinstellingen Ugent en HZ University of Applied Science zullen hen hierin ondersteunen. Gezamenlijk zullen de partners een grootschalig en geautomatiseerd zeewierteeltsysteem ontwikkelen dat betrouwbaar is op zee, en dat kan worden ingezet binnen de vele windmolenparken die de Noordzee rijk is. Het project draagt hiermee bij aan meervoudig ruimtegebruik van de windmolenparken.

The worldwide demand for seaweed is high and will continue to grow in the coming years. This offers a unique opportunity for sustainable growth of the aquaculture sector in the North Sea region. In recent years, several small-scale seaweed initiatives have been launched in the European coastal area, in particular close to the coastline. However, large-scale seaweed cultivation is not yet possible with the current state of cultivation techniques. In this project, companies Seaweed Harvest Nordsea, AtSeaNova, Murre Technologies and GEOxyz want to significantly increase the production of seaweed. The seaweed collective Stichting Noordzeeboerderij and knowledge institutions Ugent and HZ University of Applied Science will support them in this. The partners will jointly develop a large-scale and automated seaweed cultivation system that is reliable at sea and that can be deployed within the many wind farms in the North Sea. The project thus contributes to the multiple use of space of the wind farms.

Achievements (NL):

In de afgelopen jaren zijn er meerdere kleinschalige zeewierinitiatieven opgestart in het Europese kustgebied, met name dichtbij de kustlijn. Er is echter nog geen consensus over wat de beste teeltmethodieken zijn, vooral op offshore locaties, zoals windparken, die niet beschut zijn en onderhevig aan significante golfslag en stromingen. Daarnaast zijn deze offshore locaties minder goed bereikbaar, waardoor scheepsbewegingen duur zijn en een automatisering van monitoring en oogst wenselijk is. Om deze redenen heeft het Wier en Wind consortium een nieuw kweeksysteem, inzaaitechnieken en oogstmachine ontwikkeld en gemonitord vanop afstand. De expertise van machinebouwers (Murre Technologies), ingenieurs (Universiteit Gent), biologen (HZ University of Applied Sciences en Universiteit Gent), marine contractors (GeoXYZ) en de zeewiersector (North Sea Farmers en The Seaweed Company) zorgden voor de nodige synergie om dit multidisciplinair Interregproject tot een goed einde te brengen. Een direct gevolg van Wier en Wind is dat ontwikkelde technologieën ingezet zullen worden voor een meer grootschalige teelt van zeewier. Daarnaast liet Wier en Wind toe om het gebruik van verschillende nettypes, inzaaimethodes en nurseries te testen op de groei van bruinwier op een offshore locatie. Hiermee draagt het project bij aan de transitie naar een circulaire en duurzame ‘blauwe economie’ in de Noordzeegebieden van Zuid-Nederland en Vlaanderen.

Achievements (EN):

In recent years, several small-scale seaweed initiatives have been launched in the European coastal area, particularly close to the coastline. However, there is still no consensus on what are the best cultivation methods, especially in offshore locations, such as wind farms, which are unprotected and subject to significant wave and currents. In addition, these offshore locations are less easily accessible, making ship movements expensive and an automation of monitoring and harvesting is desirable. For these reasons, the Wier and Wind consortium has developed and monitored a new cultivation system, seeding techniques and harvesting machine from a distance. The expertise of machine builders (Murre Technologies), engineers (University of Ghent), biologists (HZ University of Applied Sciences and Ghent University), marine contractors (GeoXYZ) and the seaweed sector (North Sea Farmers and The Seaweed Company) provided the necessary synergy to bring this multidisciplinary Interreg project to a successful conclusion. A direct consequence of Wier and Wind is that developed technologies will be used for a more large-scale cultivation of seaweed. In addition, Wier and Wind allowed the use of different grid types, seeding methods and nurseries to test for the growth of brownweed at an offshore location. In doing so, the project contributes to the transition to a circular and sustainable ‘blue economy’ in the North Sea areas of Southern Netherlands and Flanders.
