Description (EN):

Vespa velutina is a major predator of bees and other pollinators. It was accidentally introduced in Europe and it poses a threat to biodiversity. At present it can be found in the majority of Atlantic regions. This shows that the environmental conditions of the area are favourable for its biological success. Atlantic-Positive aims to contribute to the preservation of pollination services through the development of integrated approaches for the control of Vespa velutina and minimize the impact of this invasive species for ecosystems and for the socioeconomic development of the Atlantic Area. This will be achieved through creation of protected areas in rural and peri-urban natural environments and the establishment of a transnational cooperation network for the implementation of joint activities. The aim is to establish prevention strategies and an Atlantic Strategic Plan to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services, education and training campaigns will be carried out and, finally, the networks created and Atlantic cooperation will be maintained to improve the economy of the beekeeping sector.

A Vespa velutina é um importante predador de abelhas e de outros polinizadores. Foi introduzida acidentalmente na Europa e ameaça a biodiversidade. Actualmente encontra-se em praticamente todas as regiões do Espaço Atlântico, o que é revelador de que as condições ambientais do território são propícias ao seu sucesso biológico. O objetivo deste projeto é contribuir para a preservação dos serviços de polinização através do desenvolvimento de métodos conjuntos para o controle da Vespa velutina.

Actualmente se encuentra en prácticamente todas las regiones del Espacio Atlántico, lo que demuestra que las condiciones ambientales del territorio son propicias para su éxito biológico. El objetivo de este proyecto es contribuir a la preservación de los servicios de polinización a través del desarrollo de métodos conjuntos para el control de la Vespa velutina.

Vespa velutina est un important prédateur des abeilles et des autres pollinisateurs. Elle fut introduit accidentellement en Europe et menace la biodiversité. Actuellement elle se trouve pratiquement dans toute l’Espace Atlantique, ce qui démontre que les conditions environnementales du territoire sont propices à son succès biologique. L’objectif de ce projet est de contribuer à la préservation des services de pollinisation par le développement de méthodes conjointes pour le contrôle de Vespa velutina.

Achievements (EN):

Invasive species do not understand political boundaries and spread through territories depending on their biological capacities and environmental factors. Vespa velutina is a great predator of bees and other pollinators. It was accidentally introduced into Europe, is found in most Atlantic regions and poses a threat to biodiversity. The ecosystems of Spain, France and Portugal have suffered irreversible damage and it became necessary to sustain the spread of the pest so that it does not affect the ecosystems of the United Kingdom and Ireland. The ATLANTIC-POSITIVE project aims to contribute to the preservation of pollination services through the development and test of new methods for the control of Vespa velutina, to minimise the impact of this invasive species on ecosystems and on the socioeconomic development of the Atlantic Area. The project created protected areas in rural and peri-urban natural environments to fight against the species in highly affected areas and prevent the spread of these invasive species. To achieve this goal it was created a transnational cooperation network to devise new control methods for the implementation of joint activities. The synergistic collaboration between scientists and technologists from various disciplines helped curb the spread of this pest, especially, in the natural ecosystems most sensitive to changes caused by it and the consequent reduction of pollinators. The techniques researched and implemented in the project are expected to have a clear benefit on ecosystem protection. In addition to this research process, awareness and training campaigns were carried out throughout the project. A Strategic Atlantic Plan was developed to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services against this scourge. This common strategy, with its own guidelines and procedures, was created for the entire region thus improving the economic situation of a productive sector heavily affected by this pest. Expected Results (EN):

The achievements of this project are the prevention of the spread of the invasive species, the fight against the species in highly affected areas and the consolidation of the transnational networks created. The first result of the project will be to prevent the pest from affecting the entire Atlantic Arc. The ecosystems of Spain, France and Portugal have suffered irreversible damage. For this reason, the aim is to sustain the spread of the pest so that it does not affect the ecosystems of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Likewise, the result of this phase will be to prevent the serious economic damage of this pest on a large productive sector. It is intended that the networks created in the project will be maintained after the end of the project. An observatory will be set up with the aim of maintaining the control of the pest and creating socio-economic synergies. These three sections will improve the quality of indigenous ecosystems and improve the protection of biodiversity.

Expected Outputs (EN):

• New database of organisations with beekeeping interests at international and global scale. • Creation of an Atlantic Beekeeping Observatory. • Research report on changes of characteristics in pollination networks and the effect of V. velutina as a pollinator predator. • Research report on the Vespa Velutina dietary habits based on bees. • Research report on the annual cycle and its relation with meteorological and geoclimatic conditions. • Research report on the defensive behaviour of bees. • Radio tracking Vespa velutina to their nests. • Recommendations to capture, trace and monitor individuals using radio transmitters. • Methodology for a software to record species movement.
