CABFishMAN supports cooperation between the actors involved in small-scale fisheries (SPF), in order to address the transnational challenge in the Atlantic of strengthening the protection of marine resources by advancing the ecosystem management of EPPs. Also, based on the monetary valuation of ecosystem services derived from habitats and species of EPPs, knowledge of their spatial activity in the Atlantic and their impacts on biodiversity. CABFishMAN apoya la cooperación entre los agentes implicados en la pesca a pequeña escala (PPE), para hacer frente al reto, de naturaleza transnacional en el Atlántico, de reforzar la protección de los recursos marinos avanzando hacía una gestión ecosistémica de las PPE. Asimismo, a partir de la valoración monetaria de los servicios ecosistémicos derivados de los habitats y especies de las PPE, el conocimiento de su actividad espacial en el Atlántico y sus impactos en la biodiversidad.

CABFishMAN soutient la coopération des parties prenantes à la pêche à petite échelle (PPE) en vue de relever les défis de l'Espace Atlantique : améliorer la protection des ressources marines en promouvant une approche écosystémique de la gestion de la PPE. La biodiversité sera aussi préservée grâce à l'évaluation quantitative des services écosystémiques liés aux habitats et espèces de PPE, à la connaissance de la spatialisation de l'activité de PPE et aux impacts associés sur la biodiversité et les services écosystémiques.

Achievements (EN):

Small-scale fisheries represent an important sector of many Northeast Atlantic fleets and are receiving growing attention as part of the Common Fisheries Policy reform and Maritime Spatial Planning initiatives. Several recent studies have highlighted the need to improve available knowledge of small-scale fisheries to secure their sustainable development. CABFISHMAN aims to improve the protection of the marine environment and marine resources in the Atlantic Area by establishing an ecosystem-sensitive approach to the management of small-scale fisheries and promoting a collaborative approach between stakeholders, where fishers work confidently alongside managers, government officials and scientists. To enhance knowledge of best-practice methods of data collection in small-scale fisheries, enabling their effective management, CABFISHMAN produced a comprehensive overview of the various methodologies, census and sampling approaches available for use, with an evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of each, and recommendation of best practices. CABFISHMAN also developed an operational tool to assess the impact of the small-scale fishing gear on the marine environment by considering physical, biological and chemical issues. Moreover, estimations of the net economic value and the carbon footprint spatial distribution across small-scale fishing grounds have been produced. A multidisciplinary team gathered data on small-scale fisheries cultural heritage in France, Ireland, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Spain, registering a total of 1,233 references and documents, including printed materials, films/videos, web pages, inventories, leaflets, posters, etc. This new knowledge was updated and mapped, shared to the small-scale fisheries platform using a Geotool prototype. By proposing measures for the implementation of an ecosystem approach to small-scale fisheries, CABFISHMAN is contributing to the goals of the EU Biodiversity Strategy and the Maritime Strategy for the Atlantic Area. - Improvement on the SSF spatial distribution activity data collection methods in the Atlantic Area. - Current understanding of the physical and biological effects of SSF fishing activity on the coastal and marine habitats. - New knowledge in the Atlantic on impact assessment-based classification of SSF gears and impacted habitats. - Improved knowledge on SSF and its ecosystem cultural and natural heritage. - Innovative assessment of economic net value of fishing grounds for SSF and the carbon footprint. - Recommendations to better advance management of SSF under an ecosystem approach.

- Operational SFF platform with functional research-use flow. - Mapping coastal biodiversity and SSF activity interactions in the Atlantic Area. - Assessment of the ecological and physical impacts of SSF fishing gears on biodiversity. - SSF and its cultural and heritage ecosystems impact on Atlantic coastal economies. - Harmonisation of common operational methodologies for assessing the SSF economic growth. - Mapping interactions between SSF, the ES and other users to balance conservation, protection and the economic growth in the Atlantic (Blue growth). - Database and extraction tool.
