Microplastics zijn alom aanwezig en vormen een steeds groter wordend probleem voor het milieu. Iedereen heeft weleens gehoord van de “plastic soup” in de oceanen, waarbij plastic afval afbreekt tot kleine deeltjes die vervolgens in onze voedselketen terechtkomen omdat plankton en zeedieren de microplastics consumeren. Maar een klein deel van de synthetische plastics wordt teruggewonnen of gerecycleerd na gebruik. Het merendeel wordt verbrand, belandt op afvalstortplaatsen of komt terecht in de oceanen, waarmee ze bijdragen aan de microplastic vervuiling. Vanuit de vraag naar duurzame alternatieven zal het project GREENER biogebaseerde en biodegradeerbare polymeren ontwikkelen met dezelfde eigenschappen als het wijdverbreide wateroplosbare polyacrylzuur. Hierdoor komen minder microplastics in het milieu terecht, en bij degradatie worden slechts niet-giftige, natuurlijke stoffen vrijgezet. Het is de bedoeling om deze materialen te valoriseren in een zo breed mogelijk scala aan toepassingen, van superabsorbentia in beton, biomedische materialen, cosmetica, papier tot coatings.

Microplastics are ubiquitous and pose a growing environmental problem. Everyone has heard of the "plastic soup" in the oceans, where plastic waste breaks down into small particles that then end up in our food chain because plankton and marine animals consume the microplastics. Only a small part of the synthetic plastics is recovered or recycled after use. The majority is burned, ends up in landfill sites or ends up in the oceans, contributing to microplastic pollution. Based on the demand for sustainable alternatives, the GREENER project will develop bio-based and biodegradable polymers with the same properties as the widespread water-soluble polyacrylic acid. As a result, fewer microplastics end up in the environment, and only non-toxic, natural substances are released during degradation. The aim is to valorise these materials in the widest possible range of applications, from superabsorbents in concrete, biomedical materials, cosmetics, paper to coatings.

Achievements (NL):

polyASP derivaten in niet vernette vorm UM heeft chemische modificatie van polyASP uitgevoerd met hydrofobe groepen en ook een nieuw polyamfoliet polyASP derivaat werd onderzocht en geoptimaliseerd. Een polyamfoliet polymeer bezit zowel positief als negatief geladen groepen, en kan worden toegepast als dispersant, stabilisator of anti-fouling additief. De hydrofoob gemodificeerde polyASP samples werden door Govi getest om de compatibiliteit tussen grondstoffen te verbeteren en daardoor ook de prestaties van een specifiek bouwproduct. Een andere modificatie heeft de stabiliteit van een industriële chemische formulering verbeterd. Momenteel worden de bovengenoemde effecten geoptimaliseerd en vergeleken met de effecten die worden verkregen met de additieven die momenteel op de markt worden gebruikt. De gemodificeerde polyASP samples werden ook getest in papiertoepassingen door Millvision. Gebleken is dat polyASP dusdanig kan worden gemodificeerd dat deze water afstotende eigenschappen geeft. Qua pigment binder blijkt polyASP nog niet optimaal te werken. Ditzelfde geldt ook indien polyASP wordt ingezet voor droogsterkte. Inzet van zetmeel voor een dergelijke applicatie, geeft nog steeds betere resultaten. De biodegradeerbaarheid van polyASP en de invloed van modificaties zullen worden onderzocht. Vernette polyASP derivaten PolyASP werd gemodificeerd met verschillende vernetbare groepen in verschillende substitutiegraden door UGent. Deze werden gebruikt voor de ontwikkeling van hydrogelen via UV-geïnduceerde vernetting. De hydrogelen gemaakt van één type gemodificeerd polyASP met een beperkte substitutiegraad vertoonde superabsorberende eigenschappen. Dit materiaal werd daarom getest om in mortel zelf-dichtende en zelfhelende eigenschappen te introduceren. Verder werden tevens testen opgestart om een vernetbare polyASP-gebaseerde inkt te ontwikkelen voor DLP 3D-printen. UGent en Tenco zijn momenteel aan de slag met de screening van een variatie aan condities teneinde de optimale condities te vinden voor 3D-printen. Tot slot werden er degradatie experimenten opgestart om de (bio-)degradeerbaarheid van de ontwikkelde hydrogelen te achterhalen. Zowel degradatie op lange termijn als in aanwezigheid van enzymen worden bestudeerd. Verschillende types van enzymen zullen gebruikt worden om een variatie aan degradatie condities na te bootsen.

Achievements (EN):

polyASP derivatives in unnnetted form, UM has carried out chemical modification of polyASP with hydrophobic groups and a new polyam foiled polyASP derivative was also examined and optimised. A polyam foil polymer possesses both positive and negatively charged groups, and can be applied as a Dispersant, stabiliser or anti-fouling additive. The hydrophobic modified polyASP samples were tested by Govi to improve compatibility between raw materials and therefore the performance of a specific construction product. Another modification has improved the stability of an industrial chemical formulation. Currently, the above effects are optimised and compared with the effects obtained with the additives currently used on the market. The modified polyASP samples were also tested in paper applications by Millvision. It has been shown that polyASP can be modified in such a way that it gives water repellent properties. In terms of pigment binder, polyASP does not yet work optimally. The same applies even if polyASP is used for drying strength. Using starch for such an application, still gives better results. The biodegradeability of polyASP and the influence of modifications will be investigated. Varnished polyASP derivatives PolyASP was modified with different networked groups in different substitution degrees by Ghent University. These were used for the development of hydrogels via UV-induced netting. The hydrogels made of one type of modified polyASP with a limited degree of substitution exhibited superabsorbing properties. This material was therefore tested to introduce self-sealing and self-healing properties in mortar. Tests were also launched to develop a networkable polyASP-based ink for DLP 3D printing. UGent and Tenco are currently working on the screening of a variety of conditions in order to find the optimal conditions for 3D printing. Finally, degradation experiments were started to determine the (bio)degradability of the developed hydrogels. Both long-term degradation and in the presence of enzymes are studied. Different types of enzymes will be used to mimic a variation in degradation conditions.
