Sea ports need high-energy supplies and are a source of air pollution, two environmental problems that can be minimized by using renewable energy. Considering the convergence of resources, infrastructures and facilities in ports, marine renewable energy arises as a promising alternative. PORTOS aims to assess, develop and promote the integrated use of renewable energy resources in Atlantic Area ports and increase their energy efficiency, establishing a roadmap to a more competitive and sustainable sector. The main objective is to develop and promote the implementation of renewable energy, especially marine renewable energies such as wave, tidal and wind energy, at Atlantic Area ports, as to impact two environmental priorities for ports: reduction of greenhouse gases emissions and air pollution by providing renewable energy-based solutions to harvest the renewable energy potential of Atlantic Area coastal areas. Moreover, PORTOS aims to increase the ports energy efficiency, establishing a roadmap to a more competitive and sustainable sector, mitigating climate change.

Os portos consomem muita energia e são uma fonte de poluição, dois problemas ambientais mitigáveis através da utilização de energias renováveis. Considerando a convergência de recursos, infraestruturas e instalações nos portos, a Energia Renovável Marítima constitui-se como uma alternativa promissora. O projeto PORTOS pretende avaliar, desenvolver e promover o uso de energias renováveis e a eficiência energética nos portos do Espaço Atlântico, estabelecendo uma rota para um sector mais sustentável e competitivo.

Los puertos necesitan un elevado suministro de energía y son fuente de polución, dos problemas ambientales mitigables con el uso de energías renovables. Considerando la convergencia de recursos, infraestructuras e instalaciones en puertos, la energía renovable marina es una alternativa prometedora. PORTOS pretende evaluar, desarrollar y promocionar el uso integrado de recursos energéticos renovables en puertos del Espacio Atlántico, estableciendo una hoja de ruta hacia un sector más competitivo y sostenible.

Les ports sont de grands consommateurs d’énergie et sources de pollution de l’air, deux enjeux environnementaux qui peuvent être minimisés grâce aux énergies renouvelables. Etant donné l’existence de gisement, d’infrastructures et de capacités de production en leur sein, les énergies renouvelables marines sont une alternative prometteuse. PORTOS a pour but d’évaluer et de promouvoir un usage intégré des sources d’énergies renouvelables dans les ports de l'Espace Atlantique, au travers d’une feuille de route pour une filière durable.

Seaports need high-energy supplies and are a source of air pollution. Considering the convergence of resources, infrastructures and facilities in ports, marine renewable energy arises as a promising alternative to minimise those environmental problems. PORTOS aims to assess, develop and promote the integrated use of renewable energy resources in the Atlantic Area ports and increase their energy efficiency, establishing a roadmap to a more competitive and sustainable sector. As each port has unique characteristics (e.g., different industrial activities, infrastructures, available resources), the possible renewable energy/ marine renewable energy solutions differ. Thus, to provide useful solutions to the general ports system, this heterogeneity needs to be considered by analysing different representative case studies ports throughout the Atlantic Area, which is one of the PORTOS’ objectives. The project thus developed exploration plans, implemented pilot actions, developed roadmaps and guidelines to achieve self-sufficiency in the ports’ systems, and tested devices and hybrid technologies to allow the exploitation of marine renewable energy resources in those ports. Based on the results obtained, case study ports will launch and implement the developed marine renewable energy exploitation plans. The port and transport sectors will have a detailed knowledge of the current scenario to improve and/ or develop their environmental policies. There is a firm compromise from the port authorities to include the energy self-sufficiency principles in their strategic plans for the next decade, and to take advantage of the renewable energy resources locally available. Organisations operating in the marine renewable energy sector, such as energy suppliers, the industrial sector and energy agencies, as well as the scientific community, will benefit from the results of PORTOS. Last but not least, all of the society will benefit from the improvements made to the sustainable energy ecosystem. "The PORTOS project has empowered the Port of Vigo to develop a holistic strategy for an impending energy transition to a renewable energy supply of the port’s electricity demand, based on detailed and precise information regarding our port and the available marine renewable resources in our jurisdiction areas. Expected Results (EN):

PORTOS establishes the following instruments: 1. The open platform BLUE-PORTS established to promote energy self-sufficiency in ports of the Atlantic Area through Marine Renewable Energies (MRE). A stable network of cooperation is created to share information regarding emerging MRE technologies, relevant news in the sector and technical suppliers at the different links in the value chain of MRE; 3. The OpenPorts and OpenLabs days will maintain the link with society and its involvement on the development of offshore renewable energies and the adoption of self-sufficiency practices; 5. Engagement and commitment of Port Associations to promote development of environmental policies in Atlantic Area ports, encouraging RE/MRE implementation to allow set environmental goals to be met; 6. A specific social perception plan created to show the opportunities that MRE brings to the Atlantic Area regions and to involve the main actors (staff from enterprises, public bodies and independent developers) in the development projects.

Expected Outputs (EN):

• Detailed energy efficiency audit of three case-study ports; • MRE exploitation plans and pilot actions for each case-study, including the most adequate MRE mix and conversion technologies; • Roadmap and guidelines to reach energy self-sufficiency in the AA port system; • Demonstrators of three hybrid technologies to enable exploitation of RE/MRE resources in case-study ports; • Decision Support System for implementing RE/MRE technologies in AA ports; • Proofs of concept of cutting edge technologies; • Actions (Open days/Open Labs) to involve society in the development of marine renewable energies; • Training and know-how transference to key-stakeholders, end users and society.
