The transition to a circular economy provides opportunities, especially for the food sector. However, in a global food economy, investments and new alliances between regions will be necessary. It is important to balance environmental influences with social and economic gain in policy and decision making for regional and global food flow. The NEPTUNUS project aims to promote the sustainable development of the seafood sector in the Atlantic Area by supplying a consistent methodology for products eco-labelling and defining eco-innovation strategies for production and consumption under a circular economy approach. Its main objective is to pursue a new transnational clustering concept approach (NEXUS) to review, examine and harness key eco-labelling and key enabling eco-innovations that add-value and cross-cut sea food-water-energy domains in order to address barriers and to strengthen these sectors regionally and across jurisdictions in the Atlantic region. This project will provide key actions for resource efficiency based on life cycle thinking, incorporating producers, policy makers and consumers in the decision making process.

O projeto NEPTUNUS visa promover o desenvolvimento sustentável do setor do pescado no Espaço Atlântico através da disponibilização de uma metodologia para a rotulagem ecológica de produtos e da definição de estratégias de eco-inovação para a produção e o consumo, no contexto da economia circular. Deste projeto resultarão ações-chave para o uso eficiente de recursos baseadas no pensamento de ciclo de vida e integrando produtores, decisores políticos e consumidores no processo de tomada de decisão.

NEPTUNUS vise à promouvoir le développement durable du secteur de la pêche et des fruits de mer dans l’ Atlantique en fournissant une méthodologie pour l'affichage environnemental des produits et en fixant des stratégies d'éco-innovation pour la production et la consommation, fondées sur l'économie circulaire. Ce projet permettra l'utilisation efficace des ressources, basées sur la pensée du cycle de vie et intégrer les producteurs, les consommateurs et les décideurs dans la prise de décision.

El proyecto NEPTUNUS tiene como objetivo promover el desarrollo sostenible del sector pesquero en el Espacio Atlántico por medio del desarrollo de una metodología para el eco-etiquetado de productos y la definición de estrategias de eco-innovación, bajo un enfoque de economía circular. El proyecto facilitará herramientas para la eficiencia de los recursos basadas en el pensamiento de ciclo de vida, incorporando a productores, consumidores y gestores públicos en el proceso de toma de decisiones.

Achievements (EN):

The transition to a circular economy provides lots of opportunities for the seafood sector. It is important to balance environmental influences with social and economic gain in policy and decision making, to overcome obstacles influencing producers and consumers behaviour in order to consider the importance of natural resources. The NEPTUNUS project aims to promote the sustainable development of the seafood sector in the Atlantic Area by supplying a consistent methodology for products eco-labelling and defining eco-innovation strategies for production and consumption under a circular economy approach. The consortium thus worked to deliver green economy strategies to the seafood sector to minimise environmental impacts while incorporating competitive products into green markets. The approach also involved developing strategies and policies based on circular economy and cradle-to-cradle principles that deliver new products and working systems to the seafood sector, to reduce the resources used in processes by recycling and valorising the waste outputs into production and consumption systems. As main results, NEPTUNUS published 15 scientific papers and has built a robust database for seafood supply chains, introduced technical, environmental and nutritional criteria under the life cycle inventories, promoting a continuous improvement of the environmental performance of seafood throughout their life cycle. Besides, an analytic tool is being developed to support stakeholders to estimate the impact of their activity (fishing, aquaculture, or processing). All these results will benefit industries by means of a new green eco-labelling, public authorities by providing pilot studies to contribute to the economic cohesion of involved regions, research organisations by participating in an ambitious strategy and consumers by informing them about the environmental benefits of sustainable products. "The perpetuation of fishing practices from an environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable approach is essential to guarantee not only the future of coastal populations, but also the supply of seafood to society and the safeguarding of cultural heritage. Reconciling all of this with the protection of marine biodiversity, which is an unavoidable duty in any society, as set out in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” Sandra Ceballos Researcher.

Expected Results (EN):

The proposal will establish a long-term networking based on two main complementary driving forces: i) institutions with the knowledge and the capacity to define eco-innovation strategies, ii) institutions with the ability to establish contacts with the productive seafood sector for the collection and transfer of data. The NEPTUNUS Project will contribute to the territorial balance and economic cohesion of involved regions, since its strategies and the joint development of tools and policies will contribute to balance uneven capacity among peripheral maritime regions and sectors with regard to the issue addressed by the project along its implementation. Thus, is expected that not only the cooperation frame but also the tools developed and validated during the project will continue to be used after its finalisation.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main outputs will be those strategies inform and underpin production and consumption of seafood where activities will be pursued, managed and communicated under a Nexus clustering concept approach to promote and maximise regional and cross-jurisdictional economic growth in the Atlantic area. • Strategies related to Water-Energy-Seafood Nexus footprint. • Strategies related to Circular Economy in the Seafood sector. • Strategies to address the main challenges of the fisheries in the Atlantic area, including the adaptation to the climate change and the growing threats of the marine debris.
