Het project agrEUfood gaat werken aan een goedkope en snelle manier om voedselproducten tijdens het productieproces te testen op mogelijke bacteriële verontreinigingen. Detectie in het kader van industriële kwaliteitsnormen en de wettelijke autocontrole in de agrofood-industrie is namelijk een noodzakelijk maar duur en ingewikkeld proces. De huidige praktijk is erop gericht om op regelmatige tijdstippen monsters te laten onderzoeken door gespecialiseerde laboratoria. Bij deze traditionele methode kan het tot een week duren om tot een definitieve analyse te komen. Het is dan ook niet uitgesloten dat bepaalde verontreinigingen niet tijdig worden opgespoord waardoor het risico op een terugroepactie met bijhorend economisch verlies en imagoschade reëel is. Een recent ontwikkelde sensortechnologie kan hier uitkomst bieden. De techniek, die gebaseerd is op synthetische receptoren en thermische weerstandsmetingen, heeft zijn meerwaarde getoond tijdens eerste labtesten. In agrEUfood zal deze nieuwe technologie verder worden ontwikkeld en in praktijksituaties worden uitgetest. Dat zal gebeuren bij Dürüm Company, een producent van op tortilla gebaseerde producten, en het bedrijf Alberts, dat gebruikt maakt van geautomatiseerde smoothie-apparaten.

The project will work on an inexpensive and fast way to test food products for possible bacterial contamination during the production process. Detection in the context of industrial quality standards and legal self-checking in the agri-food industry is a necessary but expensive and complicated process. Current practice is aimed at having samples examined by specialized laboratories at regular intervals. With this traditional method it can take up to a week to arrive at a final analysis. It is therefore not excluded that certain contaminants are not detected in time, so that the risk of a recall with associated economic loss and damage to the image is real. A recently developed sensor technology can offer a solution here. The technology, based on synthetic receptors and thermal resistance measurements, has shown its added value during the first lab tests. This new technology will be further developed in agrEUfood and tested in practical situations. That will happen at Dürüm Company, a producer of tortilla-based products, and the company Alberts, which uses automated smoothie machines.

De huidige praktijk is erop gericht om op regelmatige tijdstippen monsters te laten onderzoeken door gespecialiseerde laboratoria. Bij deze traditionele methode kan het tot een week duren om tot een definitieve analyse te komen. Het is dan ook niet uitgesloten dat bepaalde verontreinigingen niet tijdig worden opgespoord waardoor het risico op een terugroepactie met bijhorend economisch verlies en imagoschade reëel is. Een recent ontwikkelde sensortechnologie kan hier uitkomst bieden. De techniek, die gebaseerd is op synthetische receptoren en thermische weerstandsmetingen, heeft zijn meerwaarde getoond tijdens eerste labtesten. In agrEUfood zal deze nieuwe technologie verder worden ontwikkeld en in praktijksituaties worden uitgetest. In mei 2019 publiceerde de KULeuven een nieuwe studie die de ontwikkelingen binnen het AgrEUfood project ten goede zal komen. Uit deze studie blijkt immers dat de gevoeligheid van de thermische weerstandsmetingen met een factor 100 verbeterd werd door de verwarmings- en meetinstrumentatie te vervangen door geprinte meanderstructuren. De praktische toepasbaarheid van deze technologische innovatie zal verder onderzocht worden binnen het AgrEUfood project. Bovendien werd gestart met het onderzoek naar het opschalen en verbeteren van het syntheseproces van de bacteriële receptoren in functie van commerciële toepassingen. Dit heeft geleid tot de publicatie van twee voorbereidende studies in wetenschappelijke vakbladen. Begin 2020 werd gestart met het ontwikkelen van de meetcellen en uitleesapparatuur van de demonstrators die ingebouwd zullen worden in een smoothie machine van Alberts NV. Omdat nieuwe studies hebben uitgewezen dat electrochemische uitlezing beter geschikt is voor het continu monitoren van bacteriële verontreiniging, is Voxdale in overleg met UM, UH en KUL gestart aan het ontwerp van een impedimetrische meetunit die kan ingebouwd worden in de industriële processen van Alberts NV en Durum Company NL. De deelnemende kennisinstellingen hebben intussen een laboratoriumopstelling die bevestigt dat impedimetrische detectie van E. coli (model-organisme) mogelijk is met de huidige receptortechnologie.

In AgrEUfood, this new technology will be further developed and tested in practical situations. This will be done at Dürüm Company, a manufacturer of tortilla-based products, and Alberts, which uses automated smoothie devices. In May 2019, the KULeuven published a new study that will benefit the developments within the AgrEUfood project. This study shows that the sensitivity of thermal resistance measurements by a factor of 100 was improved by replacing the heating and measuring instrumentation with printed meander structures. The practical applicability of this technological innovation will be further explored within the AgrEUfood project. In addition, research was started on scaling up and improving the synthesis process of bacterial receptors in function of commercial applications. This led to the publication of two preparatory studies in scientific journals. At the beginning of 2020, the development of the test cells and reading equipment of the demonstrators that will be built into a smoothie machine from Alberts NV was started. As new studies have shown that electrochemical reading is better suited for continuous monitoring of bacterial contamination, Voxdale has started, in consultation with UM, UH and KUL, to design an impedimetric measurement unit that can be incorporated into the industrial processes of Alberts NV and Durum Company NL. In the meantime, the participating knowledge institutes have a laboratory set-up that confirms that impedimetric detection of E. coli (model organism) is possible with the current receptor technology.
