Decarbonisation of shipping is the greatest maritime challenge of our time and demand for low carbon solutions is growing. Direct wind propulsion along with secondary renewables: wind-sourced ammonia, hydrogen and other fuels and batteries, are all pieces in this decarbonisation puzzle. The high potential for wind energy in North Sea Region (NSR) and innovative, automated WPTs (Wind Propulsion Technologies), such as flettner rotors, suction wings, and rigid sails directly harvesting this. Vast resource will steer the industry onto that low carbon pathway.Fuel price rises, instability, emission reduction directives, carbon pricing, IMO & EU GHG strategies are all making WPTs increasingly commercially viable. WPT can be installed on existing vessels or optimised new builds. WPTs are future proof and offer quick solutions, saving 5-20% and possibly up to 30% fuel & emissions savings as retrofits. Promising initial installations are now in operation, like on the RoRo MV Estraden, LR2 Tanker Pelican & Fehn Pollux, inspiring the market to trial new WPT.At present WPT operational expertise is weak and fragmented among different players in the NSR. For further market uptake, 3rd party validation of capital and operational performance is an important precondition. This will be delivered by WASP; setting up and connecting WPT sea trials, providing validated 3rd party data and improving WPT concepts, thus enabling WPT market penetration and contributing to greener NSR sea transport.

Achievements (EN):

As the stronger combined project has come to an end the partnership is leaving the North Sea region a richer place when it comes to actual sustainable mobility options and greater insights into how to run and set them up. Throughout the project Partners have piloted different approaches and set examples allowing for trickle down effects to so many more places than simply the project areas. For instance, DIE has developed existing Village hubs with focus on social interactions and locality to include a mobility element as well. These Village hubs were such a success that they will continue to develop more in the region while also negotiating with the Flemish Government to introduce these mobility solutions into the Flemish transportation vision. Over in Sweden efforts lead by SAM to launch the new trafiklab.se and to collect references to other member states Nation access points has made open traffic data so much more available. HAL and VAR has also continuously provided data and worked on data quality checks together with SAM a knowledge that is now shared throughout Sweden to all PTAs and PTOs. Furthermore, VAR has received many inquiries to present the developed service mixtrafik to other PTAs throughout Sweden. It has also been prioritized for more funding in order to further launch the service throughout the Värmland region. As for the bike sharing scheme VAR is committed to continue to provide the service in its current form, acknowledging the importance of understanding customer behaviors when it comes to combined mobility in advance the future procurement process for all bus traffic. Bikes has been a big theme elsewhere in the partnership as well. GEN has piloted several different bike schemes such as the test bisiklet and adult cycling library, while RIN has introduced E-cargo bikes into their city’s offering. While other partners have been working hard to partake in various cooperation platforms to great success. The King of Netherlands even visited one of the Stronger Combined partners PUB. These are solutions and contacts that will remain well after the completion of the project. OPP in Norway have also been successful in enhancing their mountain routes services. A solution that pilots the combined mobility in the form of public transport and trekking. 2022 was the most successful year so far for the mountain routes. In Denmark SKI found a way to draw from customers’ needs to improve the opportunities for ridesharing. They piloted a ridesharing app together with an information campaign that was appreciated by the citizens of Lihme. HIT with the help of Stronger Combined were able to launch the GO-HI app in June 2022 delivering a Region wide, multi-modal journey planning system using real-time data that offers account-based payment available to all users for all participating mobility options. HIT were also able to secure further support from the Scottish Government in order to continue build upon their initial success, allowing them to deliver, amongst many things, an integrated DRT booking platform, improved and newly introduced eBike, folding bike and eCar club offerings. This is truly developing into a MaaS platform with a wide offering, a service to the rural citizens of the North Sea region that Stronger Combined helped pioneer. Over the years, as seen in the evaluation report by RIS, Stronger Combined has launched several pilot venturing into combined mobility, that have and will continue to improve the sustainable mobility offer in rural areas of the North Sea region. Knowledge was gained and a lot of experiences have been shared across the partnership which shows that we truly are Stronger Combined.
