La filière métallurgique doit aujourd’hui être capable de répondre aux besoins stratégiques en innovation des marchés applicatifs prioritaires (automobile, mécanique, aéronautique) pour assurer sa pérennité. Il est essentiel de développer de nouveaux matériaux à hautes performances pour élargir le champ des applications vers des domaines de plus haute valeur ajoutée, tout en garantissant le respect de normes environnementales de plus en plus exigeantes. Pour répondre à ces attentes, le projet ALLIHENTROP propose de développer des revêtements hautes performances à partir d’une classe émergente de matériaux, les ALLIages à Haute ENTROPie. Il s’agit d’alliages aux compositions complexes qui contiennent un grand nombre d’éléments métalliques en proportions égales ou voisines. Ces matériaux possèdent des propriétés uniques, ils sont imaginés sous forme de revêtements dans le but d’apporter une fonctionnalité à une pièce métallique ou d’en améliorer les performances et ainsi, valoriser des matériaux supports ou structurels à faible valeur ajoutée. L’enjeu est de montrer la possibilité de faire passer ces alliages à haute entropie, de l’échelle du laboratoire de recherche à l’échelle préindustrielle.

Today, to survive, the metallurgical sector must be in a position to meet the strategic innovation needs of priority application markets (automotive, mechanical, aeronautics). It is essential that new high-performance materials be developed to broaden the scope of applications to areas offering higher added value, while ensuring compliance with increasingly stringent environmental standards. To meet these expectations, the ALLIHENTROP project proposes to develop high-performance coatings from an emerging class of materials, ALLIages with High ENTROPy. These are alloys with complex compositions that contain a large number of metallic elements in equal or adjacent proportions. These materials have unique properties and are designed in the form of coatings in order to provide functionality to a metal part or to improve its performance and thus enhance support or structural materials with low added value. The challenge is to show the possibility of taking these high entropy alloys from the scale of the research laboratory to the pre-industrial scale.

De metallurgische keten moet vandaag kunnen inspelen op de strategische innovatiebehoeften van de prioritaire toepassingsmarkten (automobiel, mechanica, luchtvaart), wil hij zijn voortbestaan veiligstellen. Het is essentieel nieuwe, hoogpresterende materialen te ontwikkelen om het toepassingsgebied uit te breiden naar gebieden met een hogere toegevoegde waarde, terwijl tegelijk de naleving van steeds strengere milieunormen moet worden gegarandeerd. Om aan deze verwachtingen te beantwoorden, stelt het project ALLIHENTROP voor hoogpresterende bekledingen te ontwikkelen op basis van een opkomende materialenklasse, de hoge-entropielegeringen (FR: ALLIages à Haute ENTROPie). Het betreft legeringen met complexe samenstellingen die een groot aantal metalen elementen in dezelfde of ongeveer dezelfde verhoudingen bevatten. Deze materialen hebben unieke eigenschappen. Ze worden ontwikkeld in de vorm van coating met als doel een functie te geven aan een metalen onderdeel of de prestaties van dat onderdeel te verbeteren en zo ondersteunende of structurele materialen met lage toegevoegde waarde te valoriseren. Het is de bedoeling de mogelijkheid aan te tonen om deze legeringen met hoge entropie van de fase van het onderzoekslaboratorium naar de pre-industriële fase over te brengen.

L'objectif du projet est de développer des revêtements haute performance à partir d'une classe émergente de matériaux, les alliages à haute entropie (HEA). Ces alliages sont constitués d'un grand nombre d'éléments métalliques ce qui leur confère des propriétés uniques en termes de dureté, résistance à l'usure et à la corrosion. Dans le cadre de ce projet, des alliages quinaires sont appliqués sous forme de revêtements afin d'apporter une fonctionnalité nouvelle ou améliorée aux pièces traitées. L'apport de la modélisation par ULille a permis de définir un premier alliage quinaire (5 éléments métalliques). La stabilité de la phase Cr23C6, présente dans l'alliage sous forme massive, et des différentes phases présentes lors du refroidissement a été étudiée. Des poudres d'alliages mécano-synthétisées à ULille-UMET et des mélanges de poudres commerciales sont utilisées pour la réalisation de cibles et l'application de revêtements minces par pulvérisation plasma à Materia Nova, ou de revêtements épais par procédé laser au CRIBC. Les dépôts de couches minces sont réalisés sur acier ainsi que sur des substrats spécifiques tels que des acier polis pour faciliter les caractérisations mécaniques et tribologiques (au LAMIH-UPHF) ou silicium et pastilles KBr pour les caractérisations physico chimiques. Les duretés sont assez proches de celles généralement obtenues par chromage électrolytique. Une dureté plus élevée ainsi qu'une meilleure résistance à l'usure ont été observées pour les dépôts issus de poudres d'alliages mécano synthétisées. La présence de carbone dans les poudres mécano synthétisées et donc la formation de carbures semble être responsable de ces différences de propriétés. La composition chimique des revêtements (EDX) est homogène et similaire à celle des cibles et mélanges de poudres initiaux. Les dépôts sont stables en température, sans évolution de la structure cristallographique (DRX-MET) jusque 800 ou 950°C ni du caractère paramagnétique (spectroscopie Mössbauer). Ils sont composés de nano-domaine. Des études sont en cours afin de faire croître ces nano-cristaux et améliorer les propriétés des revêtements. Les couches épaisses (> 10 µm) sont réalisées par technique laser, sur des aciers à bas taux de carbone. Le principe consiste à déposer une encre contenant un mélange de poudres métalliques commerciales (de composition identique à celles des couches minces), d'un solvant et d'additifs organiques. Ce dépôt est ensuite traité par laser avec un traitement impliquant la fusion globale des différents métaux. L'optimisation de la composition de l'encre et des paramètres laser a permis l'obtention de revêtements de structure parfaitement cubique centrée, d'épaisseur comprise entre 30 et 80 µm, en fonction de l'épaisseur initialement déposée. Par rapport à la composition initiale, le revêtement présente une sur-st?chiométrie en fer attribuée à l'apport du substrat lors du traitement laser. L'observation de la tranche des revêtements par MEB montre une microstructure homogène, formée de grains de quelques microns. Une bonne adhésion du revêtement sur le substrat est observée. D'autres dépôts ont également été préparés à partir de mélanges quaternaires, le cinquième élément, à savoir, le fer, étant apporté par le substrat. Des résultats plus que satisfaisants sont obtenus pour la composition CoCrFeNiMo, qui permet d'obtenir un revêtement homogène, dense et d'épaisseur de l'ordre de 100 microns, par une approche de dépôts multi-couches. En parallèle, une autre voie de développement de revêtements épais a été initiée, via la technologie SPS. Celle-ci, outre l’obtention de revêtements d’épaisseur plus importante, permet de pallier certains écueils de la technologie laser et notamment l’oxydation de certains éléments métalliques, tels que l’aluminium. Des revêtements de composition Al19Cr22Fe34Mn19Mo6 d’épaisseur de l’ordre de 300µm ont ainsi été obtenus, revêtements dont la dureté est identique à celle mesurée sur des dépôts couches minces de même composition.

Achievements (EN):

The objective of the project is to develop high performance coatings from an emerging class of materials, High Entropy Alloys (HEA). These alloys consist of a large number of metal elements which give them unique properties in terms of hardness, wear and corrosion resistance. As part of this project, quinary alloys are applied in the form of coatings to bring new or improved functionality to the treated parts. The contribution of ULille modeling made it possible to define a first quinary alloy (5 metal elements). The stability of the phase Cr23C6, present in the alloy in massive form, and the different phases present during cooling has been studied. ULille-UMET mechano-synthesised alloy powders and commercial powder mixtures are used for the achievement of targets and application of thin plasma spray coatings in Materia Nova, or thick coatings by laser process at CRIBC. Thin film deposits are made on steel as well as on specific substrates such as polished steel to facilitate mechanical and tribological characterisations (LAMIH-UPHF) or silicon and KBr pellets for chemical physico characterisations. The hardness is quite close to those usually obtained by electrolyte chromium. Higher hardness and better wear resistance were observed for deposits from synthesised mechano alloy powders. The presence of carbon in synthesised mechano powders and therefore carbide formation seems to be responsible for these differences in properties. The chemical composition of coatings (EDX) is homogeneous and similar to that of initial powder targets and mixtures. The deposits are stable in temperature, without changing the crystallographic structure (DRX-MET) up to 800 or 950 °C or the paramagnetic character (Mössbauer spectroscopy). They are composed of nano-domains. Studies are underway to grow these nanocrystals and improve the properties of coatings. The thick layers (> 10 µm) are made by laser technique, on low carbon steels. The principle is to deposit an ink containing a mixture of commercial metallic powders (of the same composition as thin films), a solvent and organic additives. This deposition is then treated by laser with a treatment involving the global melting of the different metals. The optimisation of the composition of the ink and of the laser parameters made it possible to obtain coatings of perfectly cubic structure centered, thickness between 30 and 80 µm, depending on the thickness initially deposited. Compared to the initial composition, the coating has an iron over-st?chiometry attributed to the input of the substrate during laser processing. The observation of the coating slice by MEB shows a homogeneous microstructure, formed by grains of a few microns. Good adhesion of the coating on the substrate is observed. Other deposits were also prepared from quaternary mixtures, the fifth element, i.e. iron, being supplied by the substrate. More than satisfactory results are obtained for the CoCrFeNiMo composition, which makes it possible to obtain a homogeneous, dense and thickness coating of the order of 100 microns, by a multi-layered deposition approach. At the same time, another way of developing thick coatings was initiated, via SPS technology. This, in addition to obtaining coatings of greater thickness, makes it possible to overcome certain pitfalls of laser technology and in particular the oxidation of certain metal elements, such as aluminum. Al19Cr22Fe34Mn19Mo6 coatings of thickness in the order of 300µm were thus obtained, coatings whose hardness is identical to that measured on thin film deposits of the same composition.

Environ vingt entreprises pourront bénéficier des résultats du projet, sous différentes formes : l'analyse de la potentialité offerte par un transfert technologique, la réalisation d'essais exploratoires ou encore l'optimisation des procédés industriels. parmi celles bénéficiant d'un soutien, au moins deux par versant seront partenaires d'un projet bilatéral, fruit de la concrétisation d'un transfert technologique réussi auprès d'entreprises innovantes. De plus, à l'issue du projet, on estime que deux entreprises proposeront des nouveaux produits, les poutres d'alliages.

Expected Outputs (EN):

About twenty companies will be able to benefit from the project's results, in various forms: analysis of the potential offered by technology transfer, exploratory trials or industrial process optimisation. Of those receiving support, at least two per side will be partners in a bilateral project, the result of successful technology transfer to innovative companies. In addition, at the end of the project, it is estimated that two companies will offer new products, alloy beams.

Expected Outputs (NL):

Ongeveer twintig ondernemingen zullen baat vinden bij de resultaten van het project, in verschillende vormen: de analyse van de mogelijkheden van een technologieoverdracht, de uitvoering van verkennende tests, of ook nog de optimalisatie van de industriële procedés. Aan elke zijde zullen minstens twee van de begunstigde ondernemingen partners zijn in een bilateraal project, het resultaat van de concrete uitvoering van een geslaagde technologieoverdracht bij innovatieve ondernemingen. Men verwacht dat na afloop van het project twee ondernemingen nieuwe producten zullen voorstellen: balken van legeringen.
