The circular economy is opening new business possibilities for industries and especially SMEs. What previously was considered as a waste becomes a raw material and can be considered as a new product. The project aims to kick start a circular transformation and make a measurable contribution to delivering the boost in economic development, environmental services and entrepreneurial innovation in rural areas. For this purpose viable multidisciplinary circular economy related SYMBIOMA Technology Innovation Platform in NPA region will be established and service package thereof created. The Platform service portfolio will include access to laboratory and pilot scale infrastructures and expertise to evaluate the valuable components from process side and waste streams and develop technology innovations, technology transfer support, knowledge about similar or compatible waste streams in the region in order to increase volume and improve possible profitability via aggregation, and assistance in exploring collaborative dynamics and business models such as clustering and industrial symbiosis. Food and beverage SMEs are vital in the NPA region and are therefore chosen as a pilot basis for project activities. Approach can be up-scaled and replicated across other industry segments in rural regions. To ensure relevance of the project activities and Platform services to needs of SMEs multifunctional and multidisciplinary team is gathered and consists of multidisciplinary university research groups, laboratory and pilot infrastructure providers, R&D services providing SMEs, manufacturing SMEs and and business support organizations. Project?s results will have an immediate exploitation reach to 75 potential SMEs, who will be approached during the implementation stage. The 12 business support organisations and numerous authorities will be trained to promote circular economy and SYMBIOMA services.

Expected Outputs (EN):

SYMBIOMA will equip rural SMEs (in particular micro enterprises), regional authorities and enterprise development agencies with the knowledge, infrastructure and networks required to transform SME business operations via new, resource efficient, innovative products and services. This will drive growth, diversification and jobs creation in the targeted food and beverage industrial enterprise sector of the natural capital rich rural and remote EU regions. The multidisciplinary CE related SYMBIOMA Technology Innovation Platform established aims at removing barriers for start-up and existing SMEs and will compose of business development supporting tools, such as knowledge and infrastructure for waste valorization technology research and innovation, regulatory information, SME clustering tools and best practices, and partner/market identification tools. Different aspects addressing the business expansion goals of the SMEs will be accessible and aimed at a wide range of stakeholders (e.g. SMEs, primary producers, clusters, networks, platforms, living labs, smart villages, regional authorities and national agencies, and regulatory bodies) to provide a multi-sectorial contribution to the SYMBIOMA TIP in order to cover all potential market issues and knowledge gaps and act as an important information centre to support the SMEs activities towards the market growth. The main outputs of the SYMBIOMA project, the Technology Innovation platform, will initially reach and capture 3 different clusters of SMEs from NPA region as business cases detailing new and emerging services, products, value chains and collaborative dynamics from state of the art research in waste valorization and process upgrading, outputs on current and previous EU projects and best practice on CE. 12 business support organisations and numerous authorities will be trained to promote circular economy and SYMBIOMA TIP services. The SYMBIOMA results will have an immediate exploitation reach to 75 potential businesses which will be incorporated in the potential markets database of the SYMBIOMA TIP. A positive contribution to the programme result indicators is therefore achievable through the SYMBIOMA project since the project goes far beyond the 2013 targets for enterprises receiving support, and those being introduced to.
