Description (EN):

It is recognized that the tourism sector in the project area has a very positive impact on employment and income, as it is one of the fastest-growing sectors and still has strong growth prospect. However, in the microenterprises that are dominating the number of tourism businesses in the area, low managerial performance is shown, thus affecting their competitiveness and viability as well as the attraction of the area. Through the project "FOR A BETTER SME MANAGEMENT", the 6 partners from 5 countries aim at confronting this phenomenon and enhancing the competitiveness by improving the management and upgrading the skills of people of the tourism SMEs, ensuring sustainability (overall objective) The main idea is to upgrade the skills of the SMEs' people in order to make them able to implement managerial tools and techniques at their enterprises and to improve their competitiveness. Pilot implementations of the management tools, starting the systematic management improvement is a core activity of the project. The sequence of activities towards this objective is: Development of management tools (models) adapted to the SMEs => Creation of a group of skilled consultants/ mentors (training package, joint mentors'; training programme) => Customization of the management tools to each SME => Pilot implementations (e-training platform, e-training, mentoring) => Experience exchange (study visits) => Networking. This sequence is accompanied by project's management and coordination as well as communication activities. The target groups are: a) Business Support Organisations in the field of tourism (the project partners included), b) Individual professionals (scientists or technicians) to be registered mentors, c) MSMEs (Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises) of the tourism sector and d) the general public. The transnational cooperation adds value in the project and offers important benefits to its target groups. Also, the project ensures sustainability and is expected to have springboard and multiplier effect: - The beneficiary SMEs that will improve their management will act as role models in their areas - The existing CERTOUR Network that will be reinforced by the project, assures the transferability of the outputs & results in a wider geographical area and after the project - The mentors' registry, the management tools, the mentors' training package and the e-training platform that will be developed, will be made available to any interested party and they compose an integrated facilitation platform for SMEs' management improvement. - The wide dissemination of the results will familiarize a wide range of tourism stakeholders with the necessity of SMEs management and competitiveness improvement and will motivate them to act accordingly. From these points of view, it is clear that this project is a significantly efficient investment in the project area. Information added on 2020-05-14, regarding the mitigation of the effects of COVID-19 (the coronavirus pandemic that started in 2019) (English language only): The CERTOUR II project developed 3 Management models adapted to the tourism to support the SMEs to overcome the impact of this current unprecedented crisis. Further, the mentors’ registry, the management tools, the mentors’ training package and the e-training platform that will be developed will support the tourism SMEs to energize the business.

Achievements (EN):

Three management models adapted to the tourism SMEs that are useful for their improvement were produced: a) ICT Business Planning Tool adapted to tourism; b) Balanced Scorecard Tool (model) adapted to tourism; c) Customers' Satisfaction Tool (model) adapted to tourism. The 101 SMEs that have implemented the management tools have improved their managerial performance and competitive skills. The elaboration of a mentors' training package (used for the mentors’ training), the organisation of a 20-hour joint training course in Kavala, Greece, 1-day conferences aiming at targeting tourism SMEs, as well as the design of an e-training platform containing 6 modules, have contributed to enriching the skills of the consultants and mentors who have participated in these activities. The study visits performed resulted in a transnational exchange of knowledge, experiences and best practices between different SMEs. All the achievements abovementioned have strengthened the people-to-people cooperation and emphasised the transnational character of the project, defined by the exchange of best practices, networking and professional growth.

Expected Results (EN): R 1.1 Strength of cross-border business opportunities in the tourism and cultural sectors

Expected Outputs (EN):

1) EXISTENCE OF 3 MANAGEMENT MODELS ADAPTED TO THE TOURISM SMEs (A.T1.1, A.T1.2, A.T1.3) that necessary for the improvement of SMEs' management (derived from O.T1.1 - Specific objective SO1). 2) DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMON MENTORS' TRAINING PACKAGE (A.T2.1) for tourism SMEs mentors (derived from O.T2.1 - SO2). 3) CREATION OF A TRANSNATIONAL MENTORS' REGISTRY (A.T2.2) including 24 trained mentors able to support the tourism SMEs towards their management improvement (derived from O.T2.2 - SO2). 4) DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMON SMEs' TRAINING PLATFORM (A.T2.4) providing an effective e-training tool for SMEs staff that try to improve their managerial performance (derived from O.T2.3 - SO3). 5) 200 SMEs' STAFF TRAINED (A.T2.5) in order for them to obtain knowledge on modern management tools & methods and achieve management improvement in their SMEs (derived from O.T2.3 - SO3). 6) 100 SMEs IMPLEMENTED MANAGEMENT TOOLS (A.T3.1, A.T3.2) and improved their managerial performance and competitiveness. Those SMEs will act as role model in their regions (multipliers) (derived from O.T2.3 - SO3). 7) TRANSNATIONAL EXCHANGE OF KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCES AND BEST PRACTICES (A.T3.4) in study visits (derived from O.T3.1 - SO3). 8) NETWORKING (A.T3.5). The parties involved in the project will be asked to participate and enforce the existing CERTOUR network in order to ensure sustainability, transferability and springboard and multiplier effect (derived from O.T3.2 - SO3). Business support organisations benefit from results Nr 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8. The general public benefit from results Nr 5, 6 and 8. Others (individual professionals) benefit from results Nr 2 &3. SMEs benefit from all the results. All the results contribute in the programme expected result: Stronger cross-border business opportunities IN THE TOURISM & cultural sectors in BSB (Logical Framework). and to the indicator: R.1.1 Strength of cross-border business opportunities IN THE TOURISM & cultural sectors.
