Achievements (EN):

Climate change in the world is already a fact, and there is consensus that the frequency of extreme events will rise drastically in the coming years. On the other hand, disasters still cannot be stopped by the borders of a country and can affect the lives of many people. Bulgaria and Macedonia are located in areas with a high risk of natural and anthropological hazards and the CB area is the most susceptible to it. The objectives and the outcome of this project are in line with the overall objectives and outcomes of the program and focused on preventing and mitigating the effects of natural and man-made CB disasters, creating a joint partnership in the field of emergency response in the cross-border region aiming to unite people, communities, economies and resources in order to create a safer region. Moreover the successful implementation of this project confirmed a very strong principle partnership between Strumyani and Berovo by adding one more field in which the two border municipalities cooperate sucessfully. This project ensured prevention and mitigation of the effects of floods in the future, while contributing to socio-economic development and environmental protection in the CB area. The reconstruction of the river beds of Tsaparevska river in the village of Mikrevo, Strumyani Municipality and the Bregalnitsa river in the town of Berovo included in the project provide prevention and mitigation of natural and man-made disasters with cross-border dimension and impact. At the same time, the use of environmentally friendly technologies - geocells in the reconstruction of the Tsaparevska River creates conditions for the implementation of mechanisms to mitigate the effects of climate change. Geocells are made of materials that do not pollute the environment, do not change the flora and fauna in the water basins, are resistant to biological corrosion, as well as various pollutants that can be found in the water basins. Joint trainings built the capacity of the municipal administration and raise awareness among local populations with a focus on risk prevention. LP ensured participation of representatives from all settlements of Municipality of Strumyani which will ensure the wide distribution of the obtained knowledge and awareness. All measures taken increase the safety of the local population in the municipality of Strumyani and the town of Berovo by reducing the risk of life-threatening disasters, reducing the costs of municipal administrations to reduce flood damage, prevent floods and subsequent salinization of natural areas along the rivers and drowned animals, which are a prerequisite for the spread of diseases hundreds of miles from the actual flooded area. Target groups (local populations including marginalized communities and other vulnerable groups, municipal administrations) were directly involved in project activities where their awareness of their role in disaster prevention was and will continue to be raised and improved in respect to their prevention capacities risk management and disaster management.

Supported investments for adaptation and mitigation of climate change consequences;1.00;Within A3 LP carried out investments for repair and restoration works on river Tsaparevska (Phase II, Stage 1) for adaptation and mitigation of negative effect of extreme weather conditions resulting by climate change. LP also applied more ecological technology for the intervention which is an example of natural risk management approach. Supported joint mechanisms for disaster management and risk prevention and for promotion of climate change awareness;1.00;Under activity 3 of the project ecologically clean technologies - geocells were used for the repairs on the Tsaparevska River. This is a mechanism which protects the Maleshevo Mountain river banks. In addition partners signed a Declaration for mutual assistance in the field of the future application of ecologically clean technologies for disaster management and risk prevention and for promotion of climate change awareness valid for the whole sustainability period. Number of institutions/organizations involved in initiatives related to risk prevention and management;5.00;Representatives of the following institutions RIEWs and Basin Directorate, Municipality Strumyani, Berovo Municipality, 2 NGOs participated in activity 7 Number of participants in trainings and campaigns in the field of risk prevention, (including marginalized communities and other vulnerable groups);40.00;The trainings under the project included 40 participants - 20 in activity 7 and 20 in activity 8. All participants obtained certificates. Population benefiting from flood protection measures;19126.00;Project support the correction of 2 rivers - in Berovo and Strumyani, which reduces the risk of flooding in the two municipalities and allows protecting of their population. LP’s contribution is 5185 people (Contribution on the Bulgarian side of the border - population of Municipality of Strumyani according to official information at 15.07.2021 of General Directorate for Civil Registration and Administrative Services). PP2’s contribution is 13941 people (Contribution on the Macedonian side of the border as per Census of the population in N. Macedonia 2002).
