Description (EN):

The challenge of SASPAS is to preserve and get a better status of conservation of biodiversity of the Adriatic Sea ecosystem in order to decrease its vulnerability. The overall objective is to improve seagrass preservation and restoration through: laying safe anchorage innovative systems, performing pilot transplantations, carrying out monitoring activities and by defining an integrated management system for seagrasses in Adriatic area. The main outputs referred to the activities are: a Monitoring system with 2 data collections/monitoring campaigns, the placement of environmentally friendly anchoring systems, pilot transplantations of seagrasses and an Integrated Management System for seagrasses in the Adriatic area, made by a GIS Digital Information Platform and a Marine Seagrass Safeguard Integrated Management Program.

Achievements (EN):

The Saspas Project was developed over 30 months in three different study sites in the Adriatic Sea: Gulf of Panzano (Monfalcone), Kornati National Park (Croatia) and the Brindisi coastline of the Coastal Dunes Natural Park from Torre Canne to Torre San Leonardo. The Project aimed was protection of Posidonia oceanica habitats on the Adriatic seabed and study and implementation of innovative anchoring systems for pleasure boats and the transplanting of submerged seagrasses. The main project results are: - Implementation of a seagrass monitoring system with annual data collection campaigns, - Installation of environmentally sustainable anchoring systems (anchorages and marker buoys), - Pilot transplantation and implementation of an integrated seagrass management system in the Adriatic Sea (GIS Digital Information Platform (DIP)), - Proposal of the Integrated Marine Flowering Management Programme (MSSIMP). The main achievement of the SASPAS project was the improvement of seagrass conservation and restoration through innovative safe anchoring systems, pilot transplanting and related activities, in order to contribute to a better protection and restoration of biodiversity (Phanerogamae) in the Adriatic cross-border area. This activity was characterised by the laying and use of environmentally friendly mooring and anchoring buoys, the testing of pilot transplantations of Posidonia oceanica in places where persons have caused its regression, and environmental monitoring and surveys. In this way, an integrated safeguard plan was defined for the qualitative improvement of seagrasses and related habitats and species, with the development of guidelines for the protection of seagrasses. The guidelines are based on indications on how to behave in protected areas, contributing to the protection of the biodiversity involved, allowing it to expand and increase.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The monitoring system (WP3) is permanent, it permits to record the quality assessment of natural sites for the institutional necessities also after the end of the project. Actions developed in WP4 will prevent marine seagrasses impact from leisure traffic, mooring, human impact and minor disturb permanently; the transplanted species will grow implementing the ecological role also after the project. Integrated Management System (WP5) will give indications both on presence of species and on the correct behavior in involved areas to protect biodiversity and allow its restoration after project end. LP, PP1, PP3, PP5, PP6 will guarantee to continue playing their role even after the project with a designed budget.
