Description (EN):

One of the most pressing issues visible in the Vilnius and Oshmyany districts in recent decades is higher than national average mortality rates. Proportion of older people within the total population increases. Aging population increases demand of special healthcare services, such as emergency medical services (EMS), because the high mortality rates are seen from circulatory system diseases, especially from stroke and myocardial infarction when urgent medical assistance is needed. Patient survival and/or disability level depends on how quickly necessary assistance is given. Accessibility and quality of EMS, provided in the region is insufficient: ambulance arrival time and/or patient transportation time is too long, insufficient quality of services. Large serviced rural areas, big distances, underdeveloped road infrastructure, insufficient available emergency infrastructure and environment, unnecessary calls affects time of emergency arrival, as well as local rural residents not recognizing the dangerous health symptoms in a timely manner, late calls, not knowing how to give first aid to another person leads high mortality rates. The main goal of the project is to increase quality of life of inhabitants in the cross-border rural areas of Vilnius and Oshmyany districts by increasing availability of existing EMS. During Project implementation by coordinating integrated actions positive results are expected. The health literacy of rural residents will be increased, young people will be trained to provide fist aid, health professionals will share and improve their knowledge and the necessary health infrastructure and environment will be developed in order to ensure timely access (to a maximum possible extent) to a high-quality EMS. Interventions envisaged in the Project will help to improve services relevant for indicated group, to create preconditions for longer and healthier living for this population, lower risks of premature deaths, social exclusion and poverty.
