Description (EN): Identifying the conditions, opportunities and readiness of companies in the development of common ethnic, cultural and tourism products in cross-border economic cooperation.

Achievements (EN):

The goal of the project is fully achieved. It was possible to understand how tourists and the tourism business are interested in getting to know and presenting the local cultural heritage as a business product, how they are ready to create a cross-border product, and by what vectors this cooperation can be developed. Project activities were of a research nature. The complex research consisted of three research vectors: 1. The view on the visitors’ demand for the territory of the ethnocultural product. A study of the demand for the ethnocultural programs in the border territories (Pryazhinsky, Sortavalsky, Lakhdenpokhsky districts of Karelia, North Karelia in Finland). Coverage of organized and independent tourism. The method: a questionnaire. 2. The distribution of the supply of the ethnocultural product in the border territories. A study of the supply of the ethnocultural programs in the business of the border territories. Coverage of the guest houses, hotels and resorts. The Method: interviewing 3. The analysis of successful practices of launching and selling the ethnocultural product. A study of some enterprises in terms of the launch and efficiency of the ethnocultural product (the selection of enterprises whose business is based on the ethnocultural product). The method: a case study. The study covered more than 800 tourists and 49 tourist enterprises of the territory of Northern Karelia of Finland and the Republic of Karelia. The results of the survey of the visitors show a high interest in ethnocultural tourism programs. The most popular products are products of natural, ecological, historical, cultural and ethnocultural types of tourism. Visitors to Karelia and North Karelia in Finland primarily focus on privacy, closeness to nature and the history of these places that, in its turn, is a mix of the local cultures of peoples living there. They are ready and eager to find out about traditional forms of living through various elements of the ethnocultural heritage: literature, legends and folklore of peoples, traditional cuisine, festivals, handicrafts and crafts. A significant difference in the supply of tourism products is worth noting. In Northern Finland there is no emphasis on the people, while in the republic of Karelia it is the ethnocultural practices of the peoples that are much represented. Finns offer to get acquainted with the history of a family that is closely related to the ethnic identity (Finns, Karelians). The history of the place comes to the fore through the history of a particular family without being directly related to the ethnos. Despite the difference in the development of activities, the majority of tourism enterprises in Karelia and Finland are ready for cooperation and the creation of joint tourism products. In general, the project was implemented successfully and achieved all the targets. But most importantly, that the project laid the foundation for further work in this direction.

Expected Results (EN):

It is expected that the implementation of the project will enable to do the research on the current situation on cross-border and other road networks within the program area, including their development, condition, quality of maintenance, capacity, automobile checkpoints operating efficiency and the factors’ influence on the economy of territories, operating business expenses, attractiveness of the territories. Project analytical work will enable to reveal barriers negatively affecting cross-border economic interaction, factors that impede trade development and investment attractiveness of the territories. As a result, recommendations on the barriers removal will be formulated, future development projects will be explicated. This will provide the necessary comprehensive information for the development of a pilot training program for target groups to increase their professional potential.

1. Survey report of potencial demand of ethno-cultural products in tourist industry of border area. 2. Survey report of prevalence of the ethno-cultural product in the tourism business and the conditions necessary for the creation of joint cross-border business products. 3. Survey report of case-studies of the quality of provided ethno-cultural services in tourists firms of border area. 4. Guideline that includes the analysis of the data of the complex research of conditions, opportunities and readiness of firms to create common ethnic, cultural and tourism products in border area. 5.Short-list of tourist enterprises ready to create and develop joint ethno-cultural business products in the border area.
