Achievements (EN):

The main objective of Culture Open has been to improve immigrants’ and the disabled’s access and use of local cultural services in Joensuu and Petrozavodsk. This has been achieved by carrying out a series of accessibility mappings of local cultural facilities, as well by the implementation of an inclusivity survey, which gauged respondents’ opinions on the functionality of the cultural services from target group representatives and stakeholders. The project has also developed a series of co-creative activities aimed at empowering target group representatives in experiencing and making culture. These activities have included inclusive performance groups made-up of disabled performers, cooperation with a multicultural photography club, training immigrants interested in becoming cultural professionals in Finland and the creation of a series of multicultural storyhour workshops hosted by immigrants. Moreover, the project has aimed to enrich the cultural co-creation in the cross-border area through artist exchanges between Joensuu and Petrozavodsk. Another significant part of the project, necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic, has been the development and dissemination of accessibile communication guidelines. These guidelines have been utilized by the public, stakeholders and other projects. Culture Open’s success in reaching and engaging with the project target groups has been recognized by the Joensuu Disability Council, which awarded the project its Accessibility Award in 2019 and by the National Russian competition Intermuseum 2020, supported by the Ministry of Russia which also awarded the project its prize in 2020. Furthermore, the project was awarded the Karelia CBC Communication Award in 2020 in recognition for the project’s successful communication and visibility methods.

Expected Results (EN):

CULTURE OPEN is an inclusive, intercultural, interdisciplinary project that aims to increase cultural and social sustainability in the community, enhance social interaction, protection of the vulnerable society groups and respect for social diversity. The above objective will be achieved by providing cultural players with skills, competencies and know-how they need to involve special groups into social and cultural life, cooperating with public and business sectors (public – private partnership instrument). This will reinforce the sector’s professionalization and capacity, while promoting long-term sustainability of cultural institutions with the possibility to attract increasing numbers of citizens to participate in public culture activities. A special project attention will be paid to promotion of social and cultural interaction in the society, increase of tolerance and respect for others’ differences in the society. A number of visibility tools and public activities will be targeted at social inclusion and building of community bonds. Thus, the project will help to relieve social tensions, improve public tolerance and develop people-to-people contacts.

Expected Outputs (EN):

1. Information accessibility of inclusive cultural services for disabled people and migrants in cross border territory is improved. 2.Infrastructural accessibility of cultural institutions as to the special target group needs is improved. 3.The inclusive cultural status in the project territory is investigated and transformed into an inclusive model fo cultural co-creation to be introduced and piloted during the project. 4. New cultural services based on the inclusive model of target groups' engagement in creative co-production are developed and piloted. 5. Target groups involvement and activity for continuous and sustainable co-creation activities and interaction is improved. 6. Knowledge capacity of target groups for high quality inclusive services is improved. 7. Knowledge capacity of cultural professionals for high quality inclusive services is improved. 8. Instruments and mechanisms to ensure inclusive cultural services sustainability are developed, produced and made operational.
