Description (EN): Increasing the level of competency, methdological support and interest on conservation and sustainable development of historic settlements with wooden buildings.

Achievements (EN):

During the project implementation partners’ groups participated in the training programes (9 groups) and also 14 groups, consisted of specialists, volunteers and representatives of the local community. Scientific and methodological materials - printed materials, training videos and video lectures - were published. The album “Mystery of Carpentry (Andrey Kovalchuk) and the book “Churches and chapels of Zaonezhie” on the materials of Lars Pettersson (S.Vorobjova, T.Dudinova) take special place among project publications. The publications are of great interest for both the specialist as for the local community. Study room and Training and Production complex on Kizhi Island were prepared and equipped on the high level and now we have full-fledged resources for conducting practical training for the whole year. Study of possible ways of development of historic villages of the buffer zone of the WHS “Kizhi Pogost” became the specific direction of the project. Archival research and field study of current state of the villages were conducted. A detailed fixation of the Kurguenitsy village, including laser scanning, was implemented. On the basis of gained data 3-D model of the central part of the village was made . The created model will become the important tool for preservation and planning of the further development of Kurguenitsy village taking into account its history and planning structure. As a practical training conservation and repair works on one of the most beautiful church - The Church of John the Baptist in Lelikovo village, were conducted and piers in Oyatevshchina and Zharnikovo villages were repaired. Work with the local community was an important part of the project. The educational activities for the local community, including seminar, where the local people learned how to write and implement the social projects, were conducted. Also the Festival of Carpentry (July, 2019) became one of the most significant project event. Local people have already prepared 7 project initiatives, connected with preservation and development of their historic settlements.

Expected Results (EN):

High level of training professionals of preservation of wooden architecture and development of wooden construction using traditional carpentry. Young professionals and graduates are better prepared for practical work on historic buildings. A local community, a volunteer group is trained for preservation of historic buildings and settlements. These results positively influence the conditions for preservation of wooden architecture in the Republic of Karelia and Finland, give a chance to many a monument to survive. - Increased sense of responsibility and ownership to preservation towards local cultural heritage of the local community, which was involved in project implementation, creative thinking and discussion. - Recommendations and presented potential scenarios for sustainable development are worked out using modern wooden architecture methods for revitalization and actualization of historic settlements. This gives the decaying historic settlements a chance to become comfortable and prestigious living environments, attractive resources for tourism development, and social and economic development of the area

Expected Outputs (EN):

1. Trained specialists for practical work on historic sites. 2. Local communities prepared/trained/educated to participate in process of conservation and development of their historic settlements. 3. Developed recommendations and methodological support materials for revitalization and sustainable development of historic settlements.
