Achievements (EN):

The objective of the project was to find commercialization models for different wastewater-based recycled fertilizer products in Finland and Russia. This was achieved with following activities 1) feasibility studies for 7 cases and business plans for 5 technologies of wastewater treatment plant sludge treatment, 2) two sludge treatment technologies were tested in pilot-scale and one technology for dairy wastewater treatment, 3) preparation of recycled fertilizer from wastewater treatment plant sludge with additives and test those in barley growth tests. Feasibility studies on economic calculations were done for three sludge treatment technologies (windrow composting, tunnel composting and lime stabilization) and those were performed for Petrozavodsk Vodokanal. As a result was found that windrow composting comes across as the most efficient technological option, followed by lime stabilization. The analysis offers a good indication for the commercialization of wastewater sludge but their price need to compete with already existing materials like topsoils. Window composting turned out to be the most competitive way to handle sludge after the wastewater purification. In addition of these 3 studies, 2 feasibility studies and business plans were made for Sortavala and Petrozavodsk vodokanals based on their pilot-scale tests. In Valio Joensuu dairy two feasibility studies were also done: one was related to the struvite production in case Valio Joensuu dairy waters (laboratory scale experiments); the other one was on production of biogas from wastewater of Valio Joensuu dairy (pilot scale experiments). Two sludge treatment technologies were tested in pilot-scale, lime stabilization of sludge was carried out in Finland, in Outokumpu city wastewater treatment plant and composting technology in Sortavala vodokanal. In Sortavala, mechanical agitation and aeration of the sludge were studied. In addition, a study was carried out on the chemical treatment of sludge on a semi-industrial scale using quicklime. After pilot in Sortavala, the data was analysed and a new tunnel composting technology was proposed. A certification plan for the finished product has been developed to enable to sell the formed product. Feasibility study and business model that characterizes the costs of the product was also done. Chemicalized sludge in Outokumpu was piled at the yard of the purification plant for future use, it has potential to be used e.g as a soil improvement. In addition of these two planned pilot-scale experiments, in Petrozavodsk vodokanal the study of current technological process of composting and development of a new convergent technology for the sludge-based full cycle soil production and the recipe of the final product was done. The quality of the product was ensured by laboratory analysis in which the soil properties, sanitary and epidemiological studies of finished soils were done. Product was used for the soil improvement and landscaping in many parts of the urban area. Feasibility study and business plan were done for this Petrozavodsk vodokanal case. Granulation tests of sludge and different additives, such as struvite and potassium carbonate (K2CO3) were performed using as granulates and different composites on growth chamber tests with spring barley. The experiment showed that the application of sludge and struvite granulate composition resulted the best growth, survival rate and yield rate in spring barley than those of other sludge composition combinations.

1. An innovative and sustainable cross-border way of working is developed, which ties the target areas to a mutually beneficial cooperation in regional cross-border business development 2. Invest in cooperation started and developed to increase joint efforts mainly to attract more businesses to the regions. Better image of target areas, increased visibility, less emigration and attraction of new investments to the target regions 3. A new innovative training and educational study course for young students in business programmes which involve businesses interested in cross-border trade is created and tested

Expected Outputs (EN): 1. Innovative sludge and wastewater treatment technology with commercial potential developed. 2. Receipt for sludge or wastewater -based recycled fertilizer product. 3. Business plan for the valorization of sludge and wastewater treatment technologies created.
