Description (EN): Drinking water and waste water treatment capabilities in Sortavala district have been improved.

Achievements (EN):

The goal of the project was to improve the quality of drinking water in the town of Sortavala and the ecological condition of Lake Laatokka, which surrounds the town. The most important actions of the project were moving the water intake to a place where the water is cleaner than before, improving the water supply network with the help of new pumping stations and reducing the amount of wastewater by building a new sewer pipe. The water intake was successfully renewed, as well as the renovation of the pumping stations. As a supportive measure outside the project, the coordinator even built a new water treatment plant. Due to the financial difficulties of the coordinator's final term and the change in the international situation, there is no complete certainty as to how the installation of the new wastewater transfer pipe turned out. It can be said that the project as a whole was successful and the cooperation between the partners was successful.

Expected Results (EN):

1. The factors restraining the development of international ecological tourism will be eliminated when the quality of drinking water will correspond to both Russian and international standards. 2. The negative impact of the discharge of untreated sewage on the quality of natural water in transboundary water bodies (Lake Ladoga) will be eliminated so that the Lake water quality meets international standards and complied with HELCOM regulations.

Expected Outputs (EN):

1. Professional competence of engineering and managerial staff of Karelian municipal utility companies and municipal administrative bodies has increased. 2. Improved tap-water quality used by local citizens, foreign and domestic visitors of Sortavala district. 3. Reduced pollution of the Ladoga Lake and consequently Baltic Sea waters. 4. Visibility and promotion of project activities and results are achieved.
