Description (EN): Capacity on the Finnish side of the Vartius/Lytta bprder crossing point has increased

Achievements (EN):

The result of the project was reconstruction of the Vartius border crossing point instead of the previous non-functioning border crossing point. The latter was the hindrance to strengthening and sustaining local and regional economic development. The reconstructed BCP buildings and traffic areas were done to meet Finnish Customs and Border Guards requirements for customer services and controls. To ensure more fluent border crossing procedures and safe working conditions at Vartius BCP, the project included a reconstructed customs/border control building, new traffic management arrangements including lane check area with roof structure, lane check facilities (booths) and facilities for further measures (second line) as well as all border control technology for border checks, border surveillance and border & customs controls. On the Oulu-Vartius railway, the two railway meeting yards (Ypykkävaara and Vartius BC yard) were prolonged making the throughput times of trains through Vartius BC much shorter. Illicit trafficking and cross-border movement of illicit radioactive sources have become more apparent issue inside EU and its outer border areas. At Vartius border crossing, the fixed outdoor spectrometric radiation portal monitor was installed, which serves as secondary inspection tool for heavy traffic.

Expected Results (EN): Vartius border crossing will be smoother and safer. Passengers and goods (cars, trucks, trains) will have shorter throughput times and improved procedures will minimize the risk of illegal immigration, export/import of illegal goods.

Expected Outputs (EN): 1. Reconstructed BC buildings in Vartius BCP. 2. Extensions of current processing lanes and inspection areas. Pavement of new ad current processing lanes and inspection areas. 3. Prolonged railway yards.
