Transboundary ecological connectivity of Alps and Dinaric Mountains

Description (EN):

Ecological connectivity (EC) enables processes like gene flow, migration and dispersal of living organisms thus counteracting negative effects of habitat fragmentation and climate change. Substantial part of Balkan Peninsula is affected by difficult political and economic circumstances leading to transboundary barriers which pose challenges for EC. The project intervention objective is to strengthen transnational and sectoral cooperation to improve EC throughout Dinaric Mountains, connecting them with the Alps enabling long term protection of biodiversity in view of current and future climatic changes. Both mountain ranges are exceptionally rich in biodiversity which is threatened by fragmentation and habitat loss. To improve EC, eleven DINALPCONNECT partners from seven countries will establish a network of Pilot regions to strengthen transboundary linkages between Natura2000 sites and protected areas where EC will be explored and consolidated. Joint action plans for improved EC of transboundary habitats in Pilot Regions will be based on guidelines for agricultural and forestry practices protecting biodiversity. To support this, existing EU and national agriculture and forestry policies will be examined, giving suggestions for harmonisation with EU legislation. A socio-economic perspective will be included by exploring current pro-biodiversity businesses in the Pilot Regions, preparing guidelines for their development and a feasibility study of setting up learning and trading platform in the project area. At the macro-regional level, project partners will collect spatial data to analyse current EC and identify EC hot-spots (corridors or stepping stones) and barriers. Combining analytical results with expert knowledge exchanged during an international scientific conference and other events, the project will deliver a Strategy for ecological connectivity throughout Dinaric Mountains connecting them with the Alps, which will be adopted by policy makers.

Achievements (EN):

The DINALPCONNECT project contributed to developing knowledge and identifying obstacles for eco - logical connectivity in the Dinaric Alps. This initiative led to identifying current practices, assessing environmental balances, defining common biodiversity concerns, and creating collective synergies between the interests of each local and transnational stakeholder.

Expected Results (EN): Level of capacity of the involved organisations to operate transnational, providing service and management regarding environmental vulnerability, fragmentation, and the safeguarding of ecosystems’ services.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project will improve transnational cooperation in maintaining and improving EC and biodiversity by bringing together institutions from different sectors (nature conservation, agriculture, forestry, business support) from seven ADRION countries. Project will also ensure involvement of stakeholders and target groups (study tour, dissemination via social and other media) and enhance their skills and competences in promoting EC through joint activities established in Pilot region Action plans (such as implementation of common monitoring, mitigating measure for physical barriers such as border fences, coordinated agri-environment schemes, hunting laws and dead wood retention measures). By organising an international scientific conference and other events on EC the project will promote exchange and communication among scientists, public authorities, representatives of macro-regional strategies, managers of established international networks of protected areas and sectoral agencies. This will in the long term enable more coordinated development, better EC implementation into spatial planning and implementation of green infrastructure in the ADRION region. By producing a report on spatial data availability and a set of maps indicating priority areas for EC the project will increase availability of data and information. By producing four transboundary Pilot region Action plans and a Strategy for improved EC throughout the Dinaric Mountains and connecting them with Alps the project will increase the number of management and planning tools
