Energy renovation by individual homeowners is lagging. The impact of current support measures for these homeowners is limited because these measures are fractured and insufficiently based on the concerns of individual homeowners. Stronghouse will adjust and redesign these measures based on a better understanding of the drivers that motivate homeowners – individually and on a neighbourhood level - to invest and reduce the environmental footprint of their homes. Together these redesigned measures support homeowners in their journey from initial interest, to planning, financing and contracting energy renovation.This innovative focus on homeowner concerns reduces the footprint of 15.000 homes, generates 100-million-euro investment and 50 kiloton CO2 reduction. Stronghouse starts by analyzing existing instruments on their impact. Sharing, (re-)organizing and enhancing them with complementary tools, Stronghouse raises their impact and delivers four, related support measuresInstruments and tools that enable individual homeowners to invest in energy efficiency and renewable energiesNeighbourhood-approach to organize the necessary scale and drivers to investMarket access for regional SMEs specialized in energy renovation for individual homeownersAdoption strategies for implementing these instruments, approach and market access.

Achievements (EN):

It feels strange to use the past tense while writing about Stronghouse. During three and a half year 26 partners have worked together in speeding up the renovation wave, engaging individual homeowners in fighting climate change, combining the unique individual experience with the global challenges of our time. The global challenge of climate change, and even the necessary North Sea Region response are issues so large that they easily lead to inaction or a timid, internal focus. Stronghouse believed and Stronghouse partners still believe that neither inaction nor timidity is an option. Uniting public and private actors with the common ambition to support individual homeowners, Stronghouse realized that the real engagement and acceleration starts beyond the limit of the comfort zones of our own organizations. Thus we did not work on yet another grand design, nor did we stay with the traditional one-size-fits-all-citizen perspective. We’ve learned from digital innovation and their struggle with the gap between on one hand technical financial and organizational complexities and on the other hand the end-user who expects simplicity, empowerment and intuitive understanding. With our Customer Journey and the still growing number of detailed Persona’s we’ve copied successful instruments from the world of digital innovation and used them to attune our support to the actual needs, possibilities and wishes of groups of individual homeowners. And here, of course, we’ve also learned from digital innovation how to improve and expand digital self-assessment tools, thus also making effective online support available 24/7. Not only inside the Stronghouse partnership did (and do) we see accelerating the renovation wave as a collective effort. Partners actively engaged neighbourhoods and other collectives to improve the energy efficiency of their homes, often with the positive side effects of lower prices and more social cohesion. Key-players are of course also those craftsmen and women doing much of the actual renovation work. For this Stronghouse partners worked closely with local contractors and other professionals, helping them with upskilling, scaling and improving their services. The Stronghouse support measures matter and made an impact. However, just as important are the people working with them. Luckily, also here the Stronghouse partnership proved to be a winning team, overcoming challenges together, with frontrunners helping others to catch up. More than 33 transnational meetings, many of them online, created a culture of transnational cooperation and shared learning. This common effort helped partners to achieve their goals in their regions and thus enabled 48 kilotons of CO2 emissions reduced, 260 million euro investments generated and more than 27.000 homes renovated. The Stronghouse project has now come to an end. However, the need to keep accelerating the renovation wave stays and does the importance of attuning climate policies to the needs and possibilities of individual citizens. In these areas and in the tangible support measures delivered Stronghouse has demonstrated what can be done. Together and individually, all Stronghouse partners are ready continue this movement and to help wherever they can.
