Despite the increase of Marine Protected Area (MPAs) coverage in the Mediterranean, the objective of maintaining marine biodiversity is far from being met. MPAs are facing several pressures and still lack human capacity, skills and financial resources. Through strong, active and connected networks of MPA managers, the MPA NETWORKS project will help achieve effectively managed MPAs by providing sustainable solutions to challenges requiring a supra-MPA approach: management effectiveness, small scale fisheries management, mobile species conservation and sustainable financing. The project will support testing and adaptation of tools and recommendations from previous projects to improve marine conservation on selected pilot sites and facilitate the transfer of lessons learnt and best practices to the MPA community around the Mediterranean. Networks of MPA managers will be developed and reinforced at national, supra-national and Mediterranean levels, and a regular thematic capacity building programme will be set-up. Networking activities will facilitate exchanges between MPA managers and other actors, capitalisation of good practices and increased knowledge. This approach will be amplified by connecting networks. Through joined forces of networks and a dynamic bottom-up approach linking experience on the ground and decision-making processes, MPA voices will be coordinated and joined recommendations will support policy-making at international, European, and national level.

Malgré l'augmentation de la surface d’Aires Marines Protégées (AMP) en Méditerranée, l'objectif de maintien de la biodiversité est loin d'être atteint. Les AMP, confrontées à diverses pressions, manquent encore de capacités humaines et financières et de compétences.Grâce à des réseaux solides, actifs et connectés de gestionnaires d’AMP, le projet MPA NETWORKS contribuera à la gestion efficace des AMP en apportant des solutions durables aux défis nécessitant une approche supra-MPA : efficacité de gestion, gestion de la pêche artisanale, conservation des espèces mobiles et financement durable.Le projet appuiera le test et l'adaptation d'outils et de recommandations de projets antérieurs afin d'améliorer la conservation marine sur des sites pilotes sélectionnés et de faciliter le transfert des leçons apprises et des bonnes pratiques à la communauté des AMP méditerranéennes. Des réseaux de gestionnaires d'AMP actifs seront développés et renforcés aux niveaux national, supranational et méditerranéen, et un programme thématique régulier de renforcement des capacités sera établi. Cette approche sera amplifiée par la connexion des réseaux.Grâce aux forces conjuguées des réseaux et à une approche ascendante dynamique reliant l'expérience sur le terrain et les processus décisionnels, les voix des AMP seront coordonnées et des recommandations conjointes soutiendront l'élaboration des politiques à tous les niveaux.

Achievements (EN):

The cooperation among partners was key to ensure the success of the capitalization phase and the good completion of the project within the time frame.Remaining transfer activities were conducted during this last period. Two training sessions on marine turtle conservation and small-scale fisheries and co-management were organized in May 2022. These sessions were well attended leading to positive evaluations. The training modules developed and tested during the project will be integrated into the MedPAN training permanent catalogue and will be repeated over time after the project. Guidelines on networking have also been elaborated. In total, 82 Mediterranean MPAs were engaged in implementing management strategies during the project.The capitalisation phase was fruitful. A Policy paper was elaborated articulating recommendations at different levels on the five initial topics, plus two new on tourism and climate change. Several national and local capitalisation events were organised to share and discuss recommendations. Dedicated meetings were organised to define collegial recommendations for the EUSAIR strategy. Several activities were also undertaken at European and international levels. Acting as closing meeting, a series of capitalisation events was organised in June 2022. The three hybrid meetings were well attended and allowed to share widely the lessons learnt and policy recommendations. Five governance plans have been elaborated thanks to a solid collaborative and collective process. A toolbox was delivered on the project website to promote the most useful tools for MPAs on key topics. In terms of contributions to policies, key messages of the project and inputs have been shared and articulated at national, regional, European and international levels. The LP contributed to several key policy and strategic processes promoting the role of networks of MPA managers and the importance of connecting them on key thematic areas. Connections with other regional networks of MPA managers beyond the Mediterranean has also been pursued.The communication supported the capitalization activities at local and regional levels. We collaborated with the MPA ENGAGE project for releasing video pills on key topics for Mediterranean MPAs. Infographics were elaborated during the final capitalisation event to better illustrate the outcomes of the project. The collaboration with MBPC continued, some meetings are planned this fall to promote the results of the project.
