Description (EN):

The Med Biodiversity Protection Community/MBPC ("PANACeA2") is a horizontal project focusing on objective “maintaining biodiversity and natural ecosystems through strengthening the management and networking of protected areas”. It builds on achievements to increase the impact of modular projects’ towards common identified targets and links through:1) Synthesizing and tranferring outcomes on ecosystem protection efforts;2) Engaging a stakeholders’ community & transferring knowledge beyond the community and the project´s lifetime,3) Enhancing the communication & dissemination strategy,4) Developing the long term capitalization tool ensuring evidence based policy enforcement.The activities ensure an active community of Mediterranean actors meant to overcome sectoral borders by integrating knowledge, allowing a better informed multilevel decision-making and management of biodiversity.The MBPC facilitates multisectoral dialogue with the scientific community to ensure an effective policy-management-science interface in the Mediterranean related to biodiversity protection and sustainable development. It pursues the long term strategic goal of the Interreg MED programme by reaching beyond EU Member States into the whole Mediterranean basin. It aims to feed EU, UNEP/MAP Barcelona Convention and CBD policies linked to the protection of natural resources for sustainable development in Mediterranean protected areas and key ecological function units and ecosystems.

Description (FR):

"PANACeA 2" est un projet horizontal “Maintenir la biodiversité et les écosystèmes naturels en renforçant la gestion et la mise en réseau des aires protégées”. Il s’appuie sur les réalisations pour accroître l’impact des projets thématiques par le biais d’activités spécifiques:1) synthétiser et transférer les résultats des efforts de protection des écosystèmes;2) engager une communauté de parties prenantes et transférer les connaissances au-delà de la communauté et de la vie du projet,3) améliorer la communication et la diffusion,4) Développer l’outil de capitalisation garantissant l’application des politiques sur des bases factuelles.Les activités assurent une communauté d’acteurs méditerranéens censés surmonter les frontières sectorielles, permettant une prise de décisions à plusieurs niveaux et une gestion de la biodiversité mieux informées. Le projet facilite le dialogue multisectoriel avec la communauté scientifique afin d'assurer une interface politique-gestion-science en Méditerranée, en rapport avec la protection de la biodiversité et le développement durable. Il poursuit l'objectif stratégique à long terme Interreg MED en s'étendant au-delà des États membres et dans l'ensemble du bassin méditerranéen. Il vise à alimenter les politiques de l'UE, de la Convention de Barcelone / PNUE et de la CDB en matière de protection des ressources naturelles dans les aires protégées méditerranéennes et les unités de fonctions écologiques et écosystèmes clés.

Achievements (EN):

The MBPC moved forward in the implementation of activities and considerations for changes till the end of the project.WP1: The LP coordinated activities and advised in WP and WG actions according to their responsibilities. Common file structures for docs continue. Online MSTeams, Skype and Zoom meetings are organized among the partners, with one Steering Committee set for Jan. 2022. MBPC partners participate to JS and PANORAMED meetings. New features were tested for the MBPPK platform (storymaps). Partners contributed to reporting.WP2: The MBPC project was promoted in target events, e-news, social media and capitalization, transfer and capacity building workshops. Coordination with MPs is sought including active involvement in co-designing events and publications i.e. Tools Catalogue, story maps. Visual and gamification materials were developed i.e. videos, press release for the MoU with Pelagos and social media campaigns. MBPC partners participated in 21 events and played leading roles during some MPA Forum sessions in Monaco, IUCN WCC in Marseille and BCN COP in Turkey.WP3: Community building continued with 5 WP3 partners meetings to support the companionship process to ongoing MPs. The report of the WS on marine litter and MPAs in Montenegro in June with PlasticBustersMPAs was published. Capacity and community building were promoted via WP4/5 events. From a topic point of view, WG1 had online events on transboundary governance, WG2 had 1 best practice transfer webinar on “River/Wetland Contracts”: the experience of Tune-up; and WG3 collaborated with HPs for joint documents, and worked on Mediterranean wetland ecosystem (spatial) knowledge base with other institutions (Tour de Valat, EKBY, WWF Greece, MedWet,...)WP4: Events continued adapting to COVID with hybrid events and changes in international agendas. The EBM MSP on-site Venice workshop planned was finally cancelled and reshaped as part of the Euro-Med Academy MBPC module. An Adriatic-Ionian workshop on transboundary governance was held online in July and the report published, with a presential event delayed to Spring 2022.WP5: The report of EUGreenWeek event on pollution, health and biodiversity was published, 2 side events and 3 sessions were led by MBPC partners during the MPA Forum and 1 campus session with the Sustainable Tourism community at the IUCN WCC. MP participation was promoted. The MBPC partners participated in collaborative events to present the community and achievements.
