The Mediterranean is being and will be heavily impacted by Climate Change (CC). There is a global (CBD), EU (Directive on Birds/Habitats) and Med (UNEP/MAP, MAPII, MSSD; Barcelona Convention) consensus to strengthen Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as key tools to prevent further biodiversity loss and maintain ecosystem.Although the EU policy, MSP and MSFD, provides the framework to address CC effects, their current implementation is essentially missing. Likewise, most MPAs lack of specific adaptation plans to CC.The overall objective of MPA-ENGAGE is to promote the role of MPAs as nature-based solutions for the implementation of EcAp to CC adaptation: The QUINTUPLE HELIX (MPAs, socio-eco actors, local/regional authorities, scientists and citizens) from 8 countries will cooperate towards adapting the management of 7 Med MPAs to CC impacts. The engagement, for the first time, of citizen scientists (recreational divers) and small-scale fishery actors will be essential.The operational know-how will be capitalized and transmitted (by Trainings, Twinning &Data Sharing) to key coastal actors to develop an extremely robust and resilient strategy for success.Lastly, MPA-ENGAGE will promote a Med Policy Dialogue among an assembly of associates (scientists, MPAs, & Networks/regions). The unambiguous support to MPA-ENGAGE by organisations such as MEDPAN, RAC-SPA, UNEP/MAP, FAO; GFCM, CPMR-ICM, WWF and UfM well demonstrates the compliance with wider EU & Med strategies and policies.

La Méditerranée est et sera fortement touchée par le changement climatique (CC). Il existe un consensus mondial (CDB), UE (Directive sur les oiseaux et habitats) et Med (UNEP/MAP, SMDD; Convention de Barcelone) visant à renforcer les aires marines protégées (AMP) en tant qu’instruments essentiels pour protéger la biodiversité. Bien que l'UE, MSP et MSFD, fournisse un cadre pour traiter les effets du CC, leur mise en œuvre actuelle fait essentiellement défaut. De même, la plupart des AMP n’ont pas de plan d’adaptation spécifique au CC.L’objectif général de MPA-ENGAGE est de promouvoir le rôle des AMP comme solutions basées sur la nature pour la mise en œuvre de l’EcAp dans l’adaptation au CC: les acteurs de la QUINTUPLE HELIX (AMP, acteurs socio-éco, autorités locales/régionales, scientifiques et citoyens) de 8 pays coopéreront pour adapter la gestion de 7 AMP méditerranéennes aux impacts du CC. L'engagement, pour la première fois, de citoyens (plongeurs récréatifs) et d'acteurs de la pêche artisanale sera essentiel.Le savoir-faire opérationnel sera capitalisé et transmis (par le biais de formations, de jumelages et de partage de données) aux principaux acteurs. Enfin, MPA-ENGAGE va promouvoir un dialogue politique auprès des associés (scientifiques, AMP et réseaux/régions). Le soutien sans équivoque apporté à MPA-ENGAGE par MEDPAN, RAC-SPA-UNEP/MAP, FAO, CGPM, CPMR-ICM, WWF, UpM et PANACEA montre bien l’ampleur stratégique et politique au-delà de l'UE et de la Med.

Achievements (EN):

“Act local, think Mediterranean”. It is under this slogan the MPA Engage project started in November 2019 with a worthy goal: help Marine Protected Areas (MPA) to develop harmonised approach to set efficient adaption action face to climate change with the participation of 14 partners and 3 capitalisation boards. Beyond supporting local adaptation strategies the project intend to contribute to put MPAs at the frontline of adaptation to the global climate emergency.In May and June 2020, MPA Engage organised a first series of webinars destined to MPA stakeholders that focus on monitoring the CC impacts, assessing their ecological and socio-economic vulnerability, and how to engage the local communities through citizen science actions. They presented stakeholders with concrete tools, protocols, and ready-to-use material. Thanks to an efficient communication campaign, theses webinars were quite a success, with more than 400 participants. In order to maximise their impact and sustainability, all the webinars were recorded and the corresponding videos as well as related material and tools are now available online.At the end of July, the first in the field “Engage Citizen Science” event was organised in the MPA of Tavolara (Italy). It involved researchers and the staff of the MPA but also instructors of diving centers “citizen scientists” that volunteered to take part in the testing of strategies and monitoring protocols as scuba divers. Through their engagement, they become a pillar for engaging recreational divers towards the monitoring of CC impacts.Raising awareness and involving people is an essential part of the MPA-Engage project. We organised the 1st Instagram photo contest “4 pictures, 4 Mediterranean”. To enter the contest, participants were asked to share photos in their Instagram profile illustrating MPAs’ natural values, MPA’s history, global warming impacts, and actions for the conservation of the Mediterranean Sea. The winners of the local and international rounds are to be rewarded and their photos will get the opportunity to be part of a collective exhibition to be exhibited at the MPAs as part of the raise awareness .MPA-Engage already possesses its own website on the Interreg Med Platform.
