Description (EN):

The need to assess and address the increasing presence of coexisting environmental threats, that propagate in space and time also across political boundaries, calls for a transactional coordinated actions based on evidence-rooted common understanding.SHAREMED will:- engage stakeholders and authorities, and jointly define state-of-the-art and regional strategies;- collate and harmonise existing info, data and knowledge and contribute to joint production of a database of coherent data;- define common procedures and jointly produce atlas of state and hazard maps;- integrate existing observing infrastructures in a common transnational system of systems and jointly disseminate observations through common portals;- enhance forecast capabilities through development and implementation of coastal high resolution transnational systems;- explore potential of new observing methodologies;- define roadmaps, guidelines, action plans.The actions above will: - increase capability of authorities and scientific community to observe, assess and address environmental threats;- increase coherence and efficacy of assessments;- favour access and use of existing information and project joint products.The project will capitalise on knowledge provided by previous projects and existing EU infrastructures, and will contribute to the definition of long term strategies and action plans for assessing and addressing environmental threats in the Mediterranean.

Le besoin croissant d’évaluer et de traiter les menaces environnementales, qui se propagent non seulement dans l’espace et le temps mais bien au-delà des frontières politiques, appelle à des actions transactionnelles coordonnées basées sur une compréhension commune partagée.SHAREMED va:- mobiliser les autorités et les parties prenantes et définir conjointement les stratégies régionales- rassembler, harmoniser l’information, les mesures et l’existant pour la production conjointe d’une base de données cohérentes- définir des procédures et produire une cartographie des états et des menaces- intégrer les infrastructures d’observations existantes dans un système transnational et les diffuser au moyen de portails communs- améliorer les capacités de prévision par la mise en œuvre de systèmes transnationaux à haute résolution- explorer le potentiel de nouvelles méthodes d’observation- définir des feuilles de route, des lignes directrices et plans d’action.Les actions listées ci-dessus vont:- accroître la capacité des autorités et des scientifiques d’observer, d’évaluer et de traiter les menaces environnementales- accroître la cohérence et l’efficacité des évaluations- favoriser l’accès et l’utilisation des produits communs du projet.Le projet capitalisera les connaissances issues du projet et des infrastructures existantes de l’UE et contribuera à la définition de stratégies/plans d’action à long terme pour l’évaluation et la gestion des menaces environnementales en Méd.

Achievements (EN):

The project has started regularly, and in agreement with planned course. We had a successful kick-off meeting, participate to a few cross projects’ meetings, in order to establish links and synergies with other INTERREG MED projects, including PANORAMED and other strategic projects. We defined and launched a number of thematic working groups and 3 regional working groups. However, the beginning and progressive worsening of pandemic situation all over Europe, occurred just few months after the start of the project, heavily impacted on the project agenda, and forced us to rethink and redesigned several activities. In spite of this, we were able to keep most activities running, and reached several impornat results.From the technical and scientifical perspective, project partners were able to finalize the design and operationalization of the relocatable forecast system of physical and biogeochemical marine properties, which will be tested in the next phase in different study sites. Furthermore, several thematic working groups have began to actually work together on harmonization of protocols and data acquisition. From a “governance” perspective, a list of major players to be involved in each of the study sites has been produced, subdivided in: a) group of stakeholders engaged to identify needs and gaps from a societal and user perspective; b) group of stakeholders able to propose and suggest technical “solutions” or paths toward solutions; and c) group of stakeholders able to share infrastructure/data/manpower to meet the challenge of assessing and addressing environmental threats. The next steps will be to formalize the groups, and possibly enlarge them. Additionally, a major effort has been made in the preparation of a general capitalization meetings, in which more than 40 experts from all over the Mediterranean will share their vision, experience, and expertise gained in previous and sister projects, as well as their vision of the most successful path towards SHAREMED major objective.
