WINTER MED promotes the transition from the current overexploitation of insular tourist destinations during the summer to an alternative, sustainable, all-year round use of these territories, by delivering a transnational strategy and the tools for changing and upgrading one of the key sectors of the Mediterranean area. The project is built on the potential of capitalisation: analysing, assembling, adapting and testing available tools and methodologies to deliver a transnational strategy for the development of all-year round sustainable and responsible tourism in Mediterranean island destinations.The partners co-construct integrated solutions to common challenges, focusing in the common interests, beyond and besides the dimensions usually associated to the competition between destinations in a global market. From this objective and approach stems the holistic intervention aligned and contributing to ICZM and MSP in the area.The final transnational strategy provides the tools for and the demonstration of the benefits of policy learning and evidence-based decision-making. The partnership gathers a group of institutions with recognised experience in EU projects and tourism in insular areas. Furthermore, their complementary capacities allow the deployment of the sequential work plan: from the analysis of previous results to its implementation and improvement towards mainstreaming the project conclusions and widening their integration into the different policy and economic levels

WinterMed vise la transition de la surexploitation actuelle des destinations touristiques insulaires pendant l'été vers une utilisation alternative, durable et permanente de ces territoires, en proposant une stratégie transnationale et des outils pour changer et moderniser ce secteur-clé de la Méditerranée. Le projet est axé sur la capitalisation: analyser, assembler, adapter et tester les outils et méthodologies disponibles pour livrer une stratégie transnationale pour le développement d'un tourisme durable et responsable tout au long de l'année dans les destinations insulaires méditerranéennes. Les partenaires co-construisent des solutions intégrées à des défis communs, en se focalisant sur les intérêts communs, au-delà des aspects liés à la concurrence entre territoires dans le marché global. Cette approche induit l'intervention holistique alignée avec et contribuant à la GIZC et à la PSM dans la région. La stratégie transnationale finale offre les outils et la preuve des atouts de l'apprentissage politique et de la prise de décision basée sur des données factuelles. Le partenariat rassemble des institutions aux parcours reconnus sur les projets européens comme sur le tourisme en zones insulaires. La complémentarité de leurs capacités assure la réussite du plan de travail séquentiel: de l'analyse des résultats disponibles au teste et son amélioration vers l'intégration des conclusions du projet et l'élargissement du transfert aux différents niveaux politiques etéconomiques

Achievements (EN):

The last semester of WINTERMED project was dedicated to capitalisation and dissemination activities with the aim to mainstream the project results beyond participating territories. Over the past two and a half years the partnership has been working towards sustainable development in the Mediterranean region, with a particular focus on islands, transforming traditional tourism into a year-round sustainable economy. This project, carried out in a participatory way, developed tools to enable tourism stakeholders to become more competent in terms of sustainable tourism planning, as well as a transnational year-round tourism strategy. The partners translated the main lessons learned during this process in WINTERMED Policy paper, that was published at the beginning of the year. The document advocates for a common commitment of tourism stakeholders and different governance levels to a "Year-round Tourism Strategy for the Mediterranean Islands". A Memorandum of Understanding was delivered as well following the final approval of the policy paper. These two documents were the basis of capitalisation activities that took place in the last semester. The EU wide advocacy campaign was carried out to promote WINTER MED's joint vision for sustainable and responsible year-round tourism in Mediterranean island destinations. Under the title #YearRoundMed, the campaign aimed to engage key sustainable tourism stakeholders. The WINTER MED partnership organised its 2nd Engagement Forum back-to-back the CPMR–Intermediterranean Commission Task Force on Culture and Sustainable Tourism, held online on 25th of May, 2022. The aim was to present project final results and to invite the participating organisations to endorse project outputs by signing the MoU. Project partners organised several capitalisation / dissemination workshops with the same objective. On 31st May the WINTER MED project organised its Final Project and Capitalisation Event "Shared vision and commitment to year-round sustainable tourism in Mediterranean island destinations and beyond" in Rhodes (Greece) and online. This high level policy event was the occasion to share the key results of 3 years of strong cooperation for more responsible and sustainable tourism in Mediterranean Island destinations. As a result of the capitalisation activities, the WM Strategy, the Policy recommendations and the MoU were endorsed by a wide range of administrations and organisation. 37 are the final signatories of the MoU.
