“Gazelles” are innovative companies characterized by their rapid growth pace contributing substantially in the creation of new jobs. It is estimated that Gazelles represent only 4% of all companies, but account for 70% of all new jobs. The “Gazelle project”, under the framework of the INTERREG Balkan - Mediterranean 2014-2020 program, is planning and implementing joint sustainable measures in order to create a dynamic ecosystem for innovative SMEs in the Balkan Med area. The general objective of the project is twofold: the acceleration of BalkanMed “Gazelles” and the creation of an ecosystem where “Gazelles can run faster and further”. Specifically, the project aims to tackle the major obstacles in the development and growth of Gazelles: access to finance through the support of the creation and the valorization of Business Angels Networks (BANs) and access to external knowledge whether this is knowledge of the market or technical expertise by boosting technology transfer strategies and facilitating the connection between universities and innovative SMEs.

Expected Results (EN):

The activities and the expected results of the Gazelle project include: Development of a transnational integrated mechanism facilitating “Gazelles” at an early stage of development by promoting access to a) finance and b) scientific knowledge and expertise that can be directly ‘put into action’. Strengthened organizations that can support the creation of business angel networks. Transfer of best practices - development of integrated methodology - including tools for business angels and entrepreneurs / potential entrepreneurs, as well as knowhow transfer tools Implementation of an intensive business acceleration program for selected innovative SMEs that is focused in two important axes : the angel market and the technology transfer. Policy updates and recommendation in the fields of technology transfer to SMEs, innovation as well as promotion and support of BANs.

Expected Outputs (EN):

All management and coordination tools and deliverables will be produced in the framework of WP1 and all communication and dissemination tools and deliverables will be produced in the framework of WP2. The WP3 (Current Situation and Best Practice Analysis) is constituted by 3 deliverables: - 1 study describing the current situation in regard to the characteristics of the Business Angels (BA) market and Technology Transfer (TT) (3.1). - 1 in-depth research on best practices, tools and Actors related to BA and TT (3.2). - 2 study visits to two significant Actors (one study visit related to BA and one to TT) (3.3). The WP4 (Development of the Support Mechanism) is constituted by 5 deliverables: - 1 integrated management system and one Master-Plan for the establishment and operation of the Support Centers (SC) and their network (4.1). - 3 training packages (1 for the innovative SMEs, 1 for the staff of the SC, 1 for BAs) (4.2). - 1 toolkit for the SC (patent, IP and company valuation tools,‘sanity check’ tool of startups,due diligence tools, elevator pitch templates, code of conduct for BANs etc) (4.3). - 4 training seminars (Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, North Macedonia) (4.4). - 4 fully operational Support Centers (Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, North Macedonia)(4.5). The WP5 (Measures to accelerate Gazelles) is constituted by 4 deliverables: - 4 selection process for the selection of 35 innovative SMEs (10 in Bulgaria,10 in Greece,10 in Cyprus, 5 in North Macedonia) (5.1). - 4 acceleration programs (Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, North Macedonia) (5.2). - 35 SMEs will get technology tranfer support (10 in Greece, 10 in Cyprus, 10 in Bulgaria, 5 in North Macedonia) (5.3). - 4 Transnational Investment Forums(Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, North Macedonia) (5.4). The WP6 (Sustainability Activities) is constituted by 3 deliverables: - One assessment study of the measures to accelerate Gazelle (6.1). - One Follow-up Plan for the SC (6.2). - One policy recommendations study (6.3).
