Description (EN):

The proposed project SEAVIEWS, “SEctor Adaptive Virtual Early Warning System for Marine Pollution” aims at promoting and enhancing the capacity of transnational collaborations tackling environmental vulnerability, fragmentation and the safeguarding of ecosystem services in the wider Adriatic area. The SEAVIEWS project will bring together stakeholders from 6 partner states; namely Greece, Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy and Slovenia. The first output of the project refers to the development of a transnational repository network that will receive, store and analyse data about the sea water quality from a network of smart sensors allocated in critical points. Individuals will also be able to post real time observations regarding marine pollution using an application. Big data analytics tools will be incorporated making this an innovative virtual early warning system for preventing and managing the marine pollution from various sources. Within this network will be marine pollution hubs are proposed. These digital labs will be established and will be used as channels, so information, data analysis and research results to be circulated to the broader society. The ultimate goal of this output is to promote through the network the people’s understanding and sensitivity and therefore, engage them in the prevention of marine pollution. The second output is targeting to the amendment of the macroregional action plan. Through the engagement of the national and regional authorities, the ultimate goal of the SEAVIEWS is to strengthen the marine environmental protection by implementing tools such as the big data for enhancing the marine environmental protection. In this context, an Industrial Committee will be established and evaluate and propose improvement actions by incorporating a dynamic decision policy process. Reaching its targets, SEAVIEWS could transform the Adriatic-Ionian Sea to the so called meta-national pioneer.

Expected Outputs (EN):

A wide variety of actors have been involved on both Adriatic and Ionian coastlines as well as on its bordering terrestrial surface. Following ADRION’s overall objective SEAVIEWS project aims at acting as an innovator fostering synergies among Partner States (Greece, Albania, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro and Slovenia) and enhancing economic, social and territorial cohesion within the region with respect to environmental protection and marine pollution, and finally enhancing the level of capacity of involved organisations with respect to services regarding environmental vulnerabiltity. SEAVIEWS project aims at increasing societal awareness about prevention and management of marine pollution, building an environmental management culture an engaging people in this initiative. As far as the marine pollution concerns, the existence of harmful substances in ostensibly limited areas may lead to diffusion and conclude to have significant impact for the whole Adriatic-Ionian Region. Taking into account that EU Directives and Regulations have effect only to European countries the need of a transnational network sharing common practices and resources within the region it is crucial for the prevention and management of the marine pollution. The project is dedicated to make knowledge accessible and understandable by the stakeholders, the public authorities, and the generic public. It is the mission of SEAVIEWS to create transnational networks sharing common practices and resources and promote knowledge sharing. Alongside, it is structured so its activities to have impact to a wider group of people and positively affect both the nature and the habitants. The advantage of the SEAVIEWS project lies in the design of the capitalization activities and the integration of new technologies into this scope so not only to inform the civic society about marine pollution but also to persuade them to become part or the solution and finally engage them in the prevention of marine pollution.
