Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide. The impact on quality of life and social participation makes it a major public health issue. However, symptoms related to speech intelligibility, emotional adjustment and relationships with others are clearly not being addressed to an adequate extent. The ParkinsonCom project wishes to co-construct and make available an evolving tool to improve communication with and for patients with the disease and their families. In order to meet the complexity of the needs and the solutions to be provided, a multidisciplinary and cross-border partnership is essential. Researchers, developers, professionals, patients and caregivers are involved in specific modules: research and needs analysis, co-construction of the tool, its evaluation and cross-border training in its use. The final tool will be bilingual (French and Dutch) and based on international standards to ensure its sustainability.

La Maladie de Parkinson (MP) est la deuxième maladie neurodégénérative la plus fréquente mondialement. Les répercussions sur la qualité de vie et la participation sociale en font un enjeu majeur de santé publique. Or, un manque de réponses quant aux symptômes liés à l’intelligibilité de la parole, l’adaptation émotionnelle et les relations nouées avec autrui a été constaté. Le projet ParkinsonCom souhaite co-construire et rendre disponible un outil évolutif d'aide à la communication, avec et pour les patients atteints de la maladie et leur entourage. Pour répondre à la complexité des besoins et des réponses à apporter, un partenariat pluridisciplinaire et transfrontalier est indispensable. Chercheurs, développeurs, intervenants professionnels, patients et aidants proches s’engagent au sein de modules spécifiques : la recherche et l’analyse des besoins, la co-construction de l’outil, son évaluation et des formations transfrontalières pour apprendre à l’utiliser. L’outil final sera bilingue (français et néerlandais) et basé sur des standards internationaux pour garantir sa pérennité.

De ziekte van Parkinson (PD) is wereldwijd de op één na meest frequente neurodegeneratieve ziekte. Door haar impact op de kwaliteit van het leven en de sociale participatie vormt ze een belangrijk probleem voor de volksgezondheid. Er is echter een gebrek aan antwoorden op de symptomen die betrekking hebben op de spraakverstaanbaarheid, de emotionele aanpassing en de relaties met anderen. Het project ParkinsonCom wil een evolutieve communicatietool ontwikkelen en beschikbaar maken, met en voor de patiënten die aan de ziekte lijden en hun omgeving. Om tegemoet te komen aan de complexiteit van de behoeften en de te geven antwoorden is een multidisciplinair en grensoverschrijdend partnerschap van essentieel belang. Onderzoekers, ontwikkelaars, professionals, patiënten en mantelzorgers worden betrokken bij specifieke modules: onderzoek en behoeftenanalyse, co-constructie en evaluatie van de tool, en grensoverschrijdende opleidingen om te leren hoe deze te gebruiken. De uiteindelijke tool zal tweetalig zijn (Frans en Nederlands) en gebaseerd op internationale normen om zijn duurzaamheid te garanderen.

Achievements (EN):

After thirty-three months of Franco-Belgian work, our project comes to an end. During this period, we learned a lot about Parkinson's disease and its consequences on communication difficulties. We would like to warmly thank Doctor Anne BlanchardDauphin and Doctor Guy Nagels, all the neurologists and the medical staff, the France Parkinson, Parkinson ASBL and Vlaamse Parkinson Liga associations in Belgium, as well as all people suffering from Parkinson's disease and their caregivers but also the health professionals who helped us in this project. Without you, we would not have been able to make it happen. The operators of the ParkinsonCom project also thank the European Regional Development Fund, financier of the project through the Interreg France-Wallonia-Vlaanderen programming, but also the Belgian and French Interreg technical teams for having accompanied and guided us throughout the project. Expected Results (EN): 686 people should be able to benefit from the software. This number includes those involved in its evaluation, the potential beneficiaries and those present during demonstrations.
