Description (EN): SHEM-WP project aims at innovative green rainwater treatment technology with improved purification by developing treatment of urban run-off rainwater and floodwater of snow to streamline environmental protection and climate change mitigation.

Description (FI): SHEM-WP hankkeen tavoitteena on aikaansaada innovatiivinen vihreä sadeveden puhdistustekniikka, joka tuottaa puhtaamman ja paremman tuloksen kaupunkien sadevesien sekä lumista sulavien vesien valumista ympäristönsuojelun ja ilmastonmuutoksen hillitsemisen tehostamiseksi.

Проект SHEM-WP направлен на разработку инновационной технологии водоочистки, которая обеспечит высокую результативность очистки городских сточных ливневых и талых вод и внесет тем самым вклад в защиту окружающей среды и смягчение последствий изменения климата.

Achievements (EN):

Project developed a new chemical free purification system for urban runoff waters. The three main step in the concept are 1) mechanical separation, 2) sorption of urban pollutants, and 3) biological cultivation unit for biodiversity support in recipient water body. The system applied shungite (SH) mineral and effective micro-organisms (EM). The overall objective of the project was to maintain and preserve freshwater reservoirs, which was addressed by developing the methodology that can be implemented into conveyance systems existing in cities. Improvement in water quality in various water elements (constructed wetlands, parks, canals, and their recipients) improves the wellbeing of citizens and attracts tourists with cleaner environment. The activities covered material studies to optimize shungite rock grade, filtration studies and design and piloting of filtration system. The prototypes were verified in field test: 2 sites in Lappeenranta, and 4 sites in St. Petersburg. As an outcome the project presents novel concept for innovative runoff water purification systems that is based on natural materials and aiming to be implemented as part of existing natural based solutions. The solutions and results have been assessed for economic, technological, social, and environmental feasibility, and concluded as a highly promising novel concept in an extensive work report.

Achievements (FI):

Projektissa kehitetiin uusi, kemikaaliton puhdistusmenetelmä kaupunkialueiden virtaamavesien käsittelyyn. Puhdistuskonseptin kolme pääkohtaa ovat: mekaaninen erottelu, kaupunkiympäristön saasteiden imeytys, biologinen muokkausyksikkö vastaanottavan vesistön biodiversiteetin tukemiseksi. Systeemi yhdistää shungiitti mineraalin (SH) ja tehokkaan mikro-organismin (EM). Projektin kokonaistavoite oli ylläpitää ja suojella juomavesivarantoja, johon projektissa vastattiin kehittämällä menetelmä, jota voidaan hyödyntää (vesien) ohjauksessa kaupunkiympäristöissä. Veden laadun parantuminen (esimerkiksi rakennetuissa kosteikoissa, puistoissa ja kanaaleissa) parantaa asukkaiden viihtyvyyttä. Lisäksi puhdas ympäristö houkuttaa turisteja. Aktiviteetit sisälsivät materiaalien tutkimusta shungiitti-kiven ominaisuuksien optimoimiseksi, suodatusjärjestelmien tutkimusta ja suunnittelua sekä suodatinjärjestelmien pilotointia. Prototyyppien toimivuus varmistettiin kenttäkokein joita oli 2 Lappeenrannassa sekä 4 Pietarissa. Lopputuloksena projektissa on luotu uusi, innovatiivinen konsepti virtaamavesien puhdistusjärjestelmäksi joka perustuu luonnonmukaisten materiaalien hyödyntämiseen. Kehitettyjen ratkaisujen kannattavuus on arvioitu taloudellisesta, teknisestä, sosiaalisesta ja ympäristönäkökulmasta ja todettu hyvin lupaavaksi uudeksi konseptiksi.
