Description (EN):

CASCADE will develop a set of concerted and coordinated actions including monitoring (observing and modelling) and management (Maritime Spatial Planning - MSP, Integrated Coastal Zone Management - ICZM, Land-Sea Interaction - LSI) to enhance the knowledge and to evaluate the quality and assess the vulnerability of inland, coastal and marine ecosystems in Italy and Croatia with the final objective to restore endangered species and to support integrated management. The project will consolidate long-lasting research capabilities in the field through a concrete dialogue with stakeholders and the participation of Agencies, research centers and universities in order to enhance inland, coastal and marine knowledge. Such shared information and monitoring protocols are essential for supporting concrete actions dealing with environmental vulnerability, fragmentation and safeguarding of ecosystem services at cross-border level.

Achievements (EN):

"These three years of activities - pointed out Valentina De Pinto, CASCADE Project Manager - allowed us to carry out important monitoring to examine in depth our knowledge of our marine-coastal areas ecosystems and to identify some soft restoration activities to protect endangered species; they have also made it possible to share this issues with the population, through the organization of numerous events and, above all, the cross-border collaboration has fostered an important exchange of knowledge and experiences between the 16 Italian and Croatian partners, which we hope will continue beyond the end of the Project”. CASCADE INTERREG PROJECT HAS RELEASED A COLLECTION OF 10 WEBDOCS: In a bid to familiarize the public with its activities and findings, the CASCADE Interreg Project has released a collection of 10 webdocs. Available on the Adriatic Ocean Literacy website (https://www.adriaticoceanliteracy.eu/tag/webdoc/), the webdocs are a blend of documentary storytelling and interactive online content that provide information about different activities carried out by the project partners. https://www.adriaticoceanliteracy.eu/tag/webdoc/

Expected Results (EN):

CASCADE main results will be to improve marine and coastal knowledge of Adriatic Sea, decrease environmental vulnerability and fragmentation, and safeguard ecosystem services. Additional results of CASCADE will consist on the development of capacity to support the protection of marine ecosystems. Final main result of CASCADE will be to assess the impacts of extreme events on marine ecosystems and develop science-based restoration methodologies and actions. These above mentioned results are strictly connected to CASCADE outputs, which aim to improve and develop of monitoring systems, to facilitate the access to monitoring data through an information system, to implement pilot actions focusing on restoration actions and improvement of integrated management systems, to engage stakeholders and improve capacity building through dissemination/communication/training activities/guided tours and scuba diving.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main outputs and results of the project are the following: 1) Integrated monitoring and modeling tools; 2) 11 Pilot restoration actions / integrated management plans addressed to marine endangered species and related ecosystems; 3) Data platform collecting information and data regarding monitoring and 4) MSP, ICZM, LSI decision support framework. CASCADE outputs and results are inherently scalable and transferable to other territories. The expertise gained by Italy and Croatia for further protecting, managing and restoring their coastal ecosystems will represent a good-practice to be transferred to other European territories with similar environmental needs and institutional set-ups.
