Description
Description (EN): TIMMOD project unites the efforts of 6 PPs from 5 Black Sea countries in a multisectoral & multidisciplinary project-consortium: TIMMOD Innovation Network, sharing the common understanding that Technological Upgrade is the key to “improve joint environmental monitoring”. TIMMOD group includes research organisations, state environmental agency, research & innovation association, regional environmental agency – a group that can exploit their complementarities to boost technology innovation in Black Sea water monitoring sector.
BSB CBC programme is the appropriate platform to accelerate the technological upgrade that is not otherwise possible by a single effort of a single country or a single sector.
Promoting Innovation aims to utilize new tools, approaches and technology to assist implementation of EU policies and programmes.
The overall project objective is: To improve joint environmental monitoring and modelling, by facilitating Technology Innovation, to improve the availability and quality of data, the cooperation in sharing of data for water quality, biodiversity statistics, assessment of fish and non-fish living resources of the Black Sea - in line with the EU’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), Data Collection Framework (DCF), Blue Growth Strategy, Black Sea Convention on Environmental Protection and other EU and regional policies and conventions.
Specific objectives (SO) are:
1) Achieve enhanced capacity of project partner organisations (and other stakeholders), to provide, use, and share, reliable and compatible environmental data for water quality parameters, fish and non-fish living resources
2) Achieve better cooperation, improved environmental data-sharing between Black Sea partners, by creation of a set of ICT shared tools
3) Put on the agenda an Innovation Strategy, designed to bring together (national, regional, EU) regulations and permits, combined with new monitoring and information technology, expanded transparency, and innovative enforcement.SO1 will be achieved by elaboration of a detailed inventory on technology innovation (incl. future and emerging technologies), and review on best practices, tested and demonstrated in Pilot Demonstration Projects (in the sea space near Bulgaria and Georgia).
SO2 will be achieved by comprehensive analysis on various ICT tools for data handling and numerical modelling of marine environment, including high-level implementation of ocean-current modelling, and development of web-based data tools, integrated in a pilot demonstration Monitoring and Modelling Data Sharing Platform (MMDSP).
SO3 Innovation Strategy is intended to scale-up the project results in all Black Sea area for years ahead - in line with the rapid technological growth – this way to secure sustainability of project results for “improving joint environmental monitoring”.
Read more Achievements (EN): Main achievements of the project:
1) Four ICT Tools have been developed:
- Web-based open GIS tool for the presentation and management of monitoring and modelled data;
- Operational Forecast Platform for the forecasting of several marine environmental parameters in two coastal areas around – Varna in Bulgaria and Batumi in Georgia;
- Mobile data tool info - TIMMOD web-GIS app in Android format;
- TIMMOD Database of hydro-environmental monitoring and modelling output and short-term forecasts.
2) An Interactive Multilingual Glossary of Terms in the Field of Monitoring of the Marine environment and Fishery Resources, with incorporated explanations and image illustrations, has been created. The Glossary includes approximately 600 terms translated in 5 languages and is designated for use by researchers, surveyors, and relevant stakeholders.
All of them are available on the project website: http://timmod.org/index.php/en/, section “ICT Tools”.
3) Pilot demonstration actions were conducted in coastal areas near Varna (Bulgaria) in June 2021 and Batumi (Georgia) in October 2021 and April 2022. The latest hydro-acoustic devices were used to monitor the biomass in the water column, which gives a whole new perspective on the fish stock assessment in the Black Sea.
4) Elaboration of an Innovation Strategy supporting the technological upgrade of monitoring & modelling activities – based on research and stakeholder consultations and discussions on the national and regional levels.
5) TIMMOD Project Story-Video is available on the project website in English, Bulgarian, Georgian, Greek and Romanian (http://timmod.org/index.php/en/news/timmod-video).
Activities were implemented in order to improve the joint environmental monitoring and modelling for assessing fish and non-fish living resources in the Black Sea, through technological innovation and cross-border data sharing, based on innovative technology tools and best practices.

Expected Results (EN): R 2.1 Level of availability of cross-border compatible environmental monitoring data and information
Expected Outputs (EN): The following results will be achieved: - New capacities for executing marine environmental surveys will be achieved, as a result of the delivery and adaption of innovative tools and methodologies, within the Pilot Demonstration Projects (GA T.3), - A set of ICT tools will be developed and integrated in a Monitoring & Modelling Data Sharing Platform (GA T.3.) providing a common environmental data handling & data-sharing platform, open public access of data, and forecasting (numerical simulations) of hydro-environmental processes - New cross-border compatible environmental data will be obtained for water quality parameters, fish and non-fish census count, within the pilot projects (GA T.3) for the marine areas near Varna, and Batumi. - A number of research organisations, will be involved in the TIMMOD Research & Innovation cooperation activities (Thematic Transboundary meetings, national workshops, international conference, demonstration project) within GA T.1, T.3, and T.4., including raising qualification of researchers, training and capacity building of decision makers. All the above project result directly contribute to the program Priority 2.1 expected result: Improved availability of cross-border compatible environmental monitoring data and information within Black Sea Basin The relevant programme result indicator R.2.1: Level of availability of cross-border compatible environmental monitoring data and information - will be improved, with new data collected (GA T.3) and new capacity created (GA T.1, T.2 and T.3). Contribution to Common Output Indicators can be summarised as follows: COI.2.1.1 New ICT tools will be developed (provided by GA T.2) COI.2.1.2 A number of institutions (the 6 partners, and other) will use programme support for cooperation in education, R&D and innovation to improve data sharing and cross-border information exchange systems on the environment (provided by GA T.1, T.2, T.3 and T.4).
