The Black Sea shores are vulnerable to anthropogenic and technogenic activities. The sources of the marine litter are basin based problem which is closely related to ecosystem and public health, conservation of the environment, marine habitat, biodiversity and sustainable development in the Black Sea region. Marine litter has a negative impact on the populations, ecosystems and wildlife, abiotic nature and economy. The project enhances awareness-based neighborhood cooperation, cross-border information exchange, use innovative awareness methods between six partners (NGOs, higher education and scientific research institutes) from four countries which are Turkey, Romania Bulgaria, and Georgia . In the project, cultural differences will be considered and raising awareness strategies will be developed to country-specific. The main aim of the project is to reach correct target groups, who are the most powerful impact to reduce litter in the source. In the project, “bottom-up” approach will be accepted during the training and awareness activities. In this approach, housewives, students, fishermen, muhtars, NGOs, local authorities, and decision-makers will be the main target groups of the project. In addition to that, citizens, villagers, tourism and shipping agencies will be informed/ aware of litter impacts on the marine environment and human health by using various educational/training tools. Scientists, sectoral experts, subject related NGO will joint awareness, educational and training activities. There will be many activities envisaged in the project such as in-situ trainings, field studies, cruise, visual materials (litter movement model output), and other awareness materials for housewives, students, children, local authorities, and decision-makers. Meetings, workshops, TV programmes, cartoons, toys, play cards etc will help to show litter impacts on their marine environment and human health. To stop/reduce plastic bag usage in the kitchen wastes, a housewife who live in the town will train to produce fertilizer for their field from organic wastes. Other output will be the litter movement model which will demonstrate litter movement from sources to the last decision in the sea. GIS/WEB based-hydrodynamic model is one of the best methods to identify and demonstrate litter distribution and accumulation for awareness of stakeholders. Other output will be two social surveys by using questionnaires to understand the level of public knowledge on social, ecological and harmful effects of the litters at initial and final stages. In the project, the scope of the project is to reach over 4000-4500 stakeholders directly and more than 1.000.000 beneficiaries in all partner countries indirectly.

Achievements (EN):

The beneficiaries of the project Raising Public Awareness and Reducing Marine Litter for Protection of the Black Sea Ecosystem - LitOUTer (BSB785) are organising during 31 October-2 November 2022, an international symposium with the slogan “Common Sea, Common Solution”. Marine litter is known as an important environmental problem in the Black Sea. This problem can be reduced by individual, social, institutional, and international cooperation awareness actions. Legal infrastructures regarding marine litter have been almost completed within the framework of national and international directives also national legislation, however, the expected positive outcomes have not been achieved due to the lack of public awareness. LitOUTer project aims to raise awareness among children (primary, secondary, and high school) and adults (university students, housewives, religious leaders, fisheries, agriculture, tourism sector, public institutions, and NGOs) through training and education activities supported by awareness materials appropriate to the level of interest of each stakeholder. In the project, the transportation of solid wastes triggered by humans from the source to the sea, their accumulation, ecological, social, and public health effects have been revealed, and the motivation to find solutions to the common problem has been developed. Within the scope of the project, the entry, transport, and accumulation of waste from the source to the sea was modelled, and the magnitude of the effect was presented visually to the decision-makers and stakeholders. The national and international results of the project activities and studies on marine litter for twenty-six months will be presented in this symposium.

Expected Results (EN): R 2.2 Level of awareness of environmental challenges and good waste management practices related to river and marine litter

Expected Outputs (EN):

In general, marine litter is distributed by currents along the coastline and across the region. After being environmental problem, special care was given to marine litter case in Turkey. Institutionally we paid more attention to marine litter problem in the BS coast of Turkey. In September 2004, first marine litter research was started together with KTU, local governments and NGOs (Association of Environmental Cultural Entrepreneurs, Society for the Protection of Natural and Historical Values ) by the grant of UNDP-GEF. In September 2015, KTU was carried out a survey on marine biodiversity and marine litter in the Eastern Turkish Black Sea coast. The results of these projects are quite stunning as to show the dimensions of the marine litters and their accumulations around major polluted deltas, fishing ports and small shelters. After the implementation of this project we expect to: - clarify rate of solid waste discharges from rivers, - identify degree of the pressures from different sources (i.e. rivers, fisheries and fish farms, tourism, shipping, industry), - raise awareness of the public and decision makers by using visual and audio-visual materials, web based sources, mass/social media campaigns and interviews, meetings, symposium and questionnaires, - convince housewives to separate litters (paper, glass, plastics, tin as initials) at home for further collection and recycling processes, - teach benefits of organic wastes to use them as fertilizer in their small gardens, - coordinate municipalities to start separated litter collection and transfer to recycling plants, - improve new generations responsible for saving their environment and future, Expected results from the planned activities will be useful to improve welfare of the BS citizens and sustainable ecosystem for the living resources across basin through joint reduction of marine litter in coordination to implement common actions by transforming fragile environment to good state.
