Description (EN): Creating new concepts for waste water sludge management in regional towns.

Achievements (EN):

The project REMAC responded to the specific element for improving the people’s physical living environment by providing new methods for ecologically and economically sustainable concepts for waste water/sewage sludge treatments for regional towns in relatively dispersed settlements. In many cases, current sludge treatment practices are not carried out on ecologically or economically solid basis. In Finland, open-pit composting of the sludges is about to end due to existing environmental permit practices. Finland is nationally supporting biogas production, which is implemented nationally as big-volume anaerobic digestion units. Whilst the increase in biogas production supports environmental sustainability, the dependency on centralized high-volume units forms problems in areas with dispersed population. The amount of fossil fuel needed in transportation of the sludge is high due to transportation of even hundreds of kilometres for both the sludge and the digestate from the biogas production process. Wet digestion is also very water-intensive process increasing the need to transport digestate with high water content after digestion process. The project responded to this need with investing in new biogas reactor and intermediate start for new ecosystem. New technology demonstrations to support bottlenecks in current waste water and sludge treatment processes were implemented. During the preparation and start of the project, needs to develop sustainable practises for sludge management in Russian Karelia was also considered. The original aim was to provide renewed sludge treatment process in Kostomuskha and first small-scale investments for environmental safety in Kondopoga. These were not implemented due to collaboration suspension from 2/22. The main objective, creating new concepts for waste water sludge management in regional towns, responded to the need with 4 subcategories; 1) new innovative investment for treating municipal waste water sludges with resource-effective digestion in Puolanka, Finland. Both collaborative and open tender process + production concept have innovative features. At the time of final reporting, the plant has been in operation for 1 year 3 months, mostly for process ramp-up. 2) Further development and enhancing performance of an existing sludge treatment infra BIOKOS at Kostomuksha, Russia. Collaboration and related investments were halted 2/22. 3) Low-treshold initiatives supporting further investments based on existing infra, focus on Kondopoga, Russia (collaboration and investment suspended 2/22). Objective was implemented via several new tech demonstrations in Finland; including pilot for biogas plant reject water treatment, biochar production and tests for digestate after-compost booster with related further RDI activity planning, process obsevation with infrared imaging, added oxygenation to waste water aeriation pool. 4) Solid communication throughout the programme area on the technological possibilities, further investment possibilities and frame conditions, ecological aspects and high-tech possibilities. Communication has been carried out via academic article publications (3 peer-reviewed articles), professional stakeholder media articles, appearance and presentations in relevant conferences, several bilateral/group meetings with different types of stakeholders, support for policy stakeholders such as city administration and Regional Council with various means, general public with social media appearance and providing possibilities to visit biogas plant.
