Description (EN):

The goal of the project is to develop a biotechnology for remediation of oil-polluted areas of the Arctic coastal zone. The project will produce a technology for comprehensive cleanup of coastal marine areas in the Arctic from oil contamination based on the use of mineral sorbents to collect water-oil emulsions, oil-oxidizing microbial inoculants and plants for revegetation on the treated areas.

Achievements (EN):

The project developed an integrated biotechnology for cleaning oil-contaminated coastal areas of the Arctic seas, including methods of bioremediation (biostimulation, bioaugmentation, biological-sorption treatment and phytoremediation) applied separately or together. Bioaugmentation with two local arctic oil-degrading biopreparations: based on microfungi (Tolypocladium inflatum, Meyerozima guilliermondii) and based on microfungi and bacteria (Penicillium janthinellum, Penicillium simplicissimum, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas putida) were shown to enhance oil biodegradation at low temperature. However, the fungal inoculum caused changes to the native microbial community. The biotechnology can be applied at the final stage of coast cleanup, and as the only cleanup method in vulnerable areas. Advantages: - natural cleanup mechanisms; - low impact on environmental objects, making the cleanup possible without major damage to coastal ecosystems; - relatively low costs and requirements for personnel qualifications. Furthermore, the project gained new knowledge on the native microbial community in arctic seawater, seashore sand and soil and knowledge on new so far unknown oil degradation genes that can be exploited in the future.

Delivered Outputs (EN):

Oil-water emulsions were prepared for all stages of laboratory tests. Three types of oils were used, with and without treatment with dispersant. The native microbial communities in Norwegian and Russian costal environments were identified. New potential oil degradation genes were identified. Active microorganisms were isolated from natural media. Oil-degrading microbial consortia were created based on more active strains of bacteria and microfungi. Two variants of a biological preparation were selected among studied micorbial consortia. The biological preparations with active strains were developed and tested. Sorbents (peat, activated carbon and thermoactive vermiculite) were selected and tested. Plants suitable for revegetation on oil contaminated soil were selected. The laboratory test to assess toxicity of contaminated soil after biological sorption treatment was performed.
