Description (EN):

The aim of the four country project ReArc is to restore previously modified arctic rivers. The project will map watercourses for preparation, carry out restoration measures, remove migration barriers, restore spawning beds of e.g. fish, and renovate flooding- or erosion protection constructions. This will be done in order to increase the fulfillment of the environmental objectives of the EU Water Framework Directive and the main goals of the Russian Water Codex and Federal Programme. In a broader perspective this will result in a greater potential for river ecosystems to adapt to climate change and contribute to the viability of arctic nature, environment and economy.

Expected Results (EN):

The result of ReArc is restored arctic rivers, which have earlier been physically altered by humans, to increase the viability of the river ecosystems, their capacity to counter and mitigate effects of climate change and their natural capability of providing ecosystem services which society is dependent on

Expected Outputs (EN):

1. Knowledge exchange on how to determine the ecological status of watercourses and restauration measures to increase the ecological status. 2. A description of the watercourses nature and culture values and restoration needs, in preparation of ecological restoration to achieve a higher ecological status. 3. Increased ecological status of the watercourses, as it is described in the EU Water Framework Directive and realization of the main goals of the Russian Water Codex and federal programme. 4. Dissemination of information about the project and its results. Raising awareness about rivers. 5. Creating a wide international network of organizations within the field. Knowledge exchange, planning and monitoring within the project.
